...from NYC, and trying to live around West Hollywood/Venice. Does anyone know where I can find good listings for rentals, and tips for what to look/watch out for?

and quite honsetly, the way you are going to find the most stuff, is to just hop in your car and drive around. not sure if that is an option for you...but that is what i would recommend.

do you have a chance to get out there beforehand, or are you relying on searching online?

the only way i was able to find a great place was to go to the neighborhood i wanted to live in and call the numbers on FOR RENT signs...
i would also recommend finding a place with secure parking.

I prefer to just find a place remotely, and then move in, but I may have the option to drive around, but only for a week...

try getting here a bit before you have to move, and yes drive around... alot of people don't like to list their rentals unless they really have to...so getting out and actually searching is always your best bet.

(May 26 06, 08:06)that's what i had when i was originally going to move there. i didn't find one and i looked non-stop for 5 straight days. you'll get really tired of looking at utter shitholes. you might now be in the same boat as i was though. if you got enough money to spend a decent amount on rent, then you should be fine. it takes a while though (at least in my case)

you might now = you might not

my experience is that the listing in the paper are all shitholes.

Head right to the kings road cafe at kings road and beverly, grab a coffee and relax for a bit.
That is a primo neighborhood, located centrally, just south of west hollywood, safe, and affordable. Cruise up and down each street looking for 'for rent' signs. canvass the area between melrose and beverly blvds from La cienaga to fairfax.
You will find a spot and be happy that that is where you are located.

you definitely need a car out in LA though huh?

well, my budget for housing is $1500/month
is gas/heating usually included in rent over there?
NYC is absurd with rent. I just can't afford it.
