I'm curious if some extra terrestrial civilization is watching over us and would intervene if we were about to annihilate the planet.
- Nope, they wouldn't.
Humans won't believe them, and go to war against them.
Religious people will freak out.
Because we are intergalactic idiots.ApeRobot - aliens are afraid of uspinkfloyd
- They are waiting behind the moon, when idiots of us finish killing each other, they will colonize our planet with little effort. Win win.OBBTKN

- True only reason we haven't been contacted by aliens is because we are the most technically advanced in the universe. They're waiting for us.palimpsest

- Nope, they wouldn't.

Woah now, have you just heard that we are now at DEFCON 2 and now fear that nuclear war is imminent? Well don't stockpile your bottlecaps yet, let's clear this shit up first.
First off, DEFCON is used in the US of A only. Other countries have their own systems and may even share the same name. It stands for DEFense readiness CONdition and is used to determine the state of alertness by the US military, either the entire military, branch, or location. Also, the US has NEVER officially released a DEFCON level (at least not until long after the event). The levels used by the public are more of an anticipated level. The DEFCON level we see on social media usually comes the from people who know their shit at Defconlevel.com. The site is a very informed and responsive website with an accurate ideal of the current level. This public level is what we will be discussing.
Second, DEFCON levels are not just for nuclear warfare. They incorporate military abilities and readiness with nuclear capabilities. This includes national and terrorist combatants. The site also has a worldwide level and different zones. Europe has been at DEFCON 2 for a few days now, and after Putin's, uh, announcement, today, the worldwide has transition from level 3 to level 2. We will come back to this in a bit.

world wars are likely over, though, right? i mean in a legitimate way if the superpowers ever actually decided to duke it out over world domination, that's just total annihilation ; i figure we'll continue on wars by proxy with perhaps some kind of "direct" confrontation by way of iran (i.e., US invasion for claims of WMD violations) or israel (like they'll start some shit and get the us involved by default).
I also couldn't see the USA going to war and having that many people get in line to go fight. Like, anywhere, for some time... after the past year/s, I don't see some bullshit world police scenario getting popular support or new enlists.
that being said, it must be a fun time to be an enemy of the US right now because the country is rife with opportunity for foreign powers to just prod at it, a wounded animal hiding under a rock.
- listening to NPR right now, "is pres. biden ready to go to war with iran over the bomb?" (nervous laughter)colin_s
- Your country's not particularly wounded, just suffering the after effects of four years of international embarrassment.Nairn
- Yuval Noah Harari has predicted the end of world war in his books https://en.wikipedia…nb
- Isn't this just describing how it's worked for the past 75 years? All the weapons build up and smaller conflicts are basically to change the balance of power, yuekit
- which still does overwhelmingly favor the USA at this point. China is the big threat but they have one overseas military base, USA has 800.yuekit

China fires missiles in South China Sea 'in warning to US' after plane entered no-fly zone
https://www.express.co.uk/news/w…
- this is fluff.Nairn

- it's a local fire play within an essentially international zone. You don't think the US does this sort of shit all the time?Nairn
- Meh. This thread was started 14 years ago, don't think this will change anything.Maaku
- @Naim the problem is that China does NOT want it to be considered an international zone. Lots at stake here. South China Sea is a massive conflict!Krassy
- If Trump gets re-elected, all bets are off...civil war, etc. He'll surely feel emboldened to just push buttons.formed
- Yeah, I get that, Krassy - the entiriety of SE Asia gets that - I'm just saying this event is fluff in context of prodding WW3.Nairn
- Shit's been bubbling for years. Remember this, from 2001?
https://en.wikipedia…Nairn - @Naim yes, I get all that too, but just because it's been going on for a long time, actions like the current ones aren't "fluff" but instead further escalationKrassy

- let them work it out for themselves.Gnash
- It's sad that despite how transparent this all is - how everybody can see what's happening, we'll eventually go to war anyway. Such bullshit.MondoMorphic
- Er, that blew up an oil refinery and only partially exploded? Seems legit.slappy
- The drones, impressive as they are, would've only carried small warheads, designed to prick facilities and set them alight.Nairn
- There's no reason they would've got totally annihilated. Also, I thin some crashed short of their targets.Nairn
- I don't think there's any particular hunger to go to war with Iran - it's a very hard country to go to anything like a full-scale war with. Iran knows this.Nairn
- So instead we have all this cold-war-like proxy bullshit going on. I don't think there's a need for the West to be opaque on Iran. Iran are actually cunts too.Nairn
