i feel numb. but this was bound to happen.
i have 2 internal hard drives. one for os / software, one for files. format os one due to random screw ups. (windows)... i've never had a problem with windows, ever. boots up, wont recognize d:. f u c k.
in the end... i've lost every photograph i've taken over the past 2 years, every project over the past 6, and every mp3 over the past 8. i'm just out of college, so i now have no portfolio to send to possible jobs. the mp3s are fine, i can re-rip my library... but the photos, the places i've been... i take about 100 - 200 photos a month, and this is just devestating.
time to get a dvd drive. you live you learn, i guess. it's just bad because my primary & backup failed on the same day.
anyway, carry on. had to vent.

before you toss that drive...
remember you can recover data.
there's DataRescue for OS X, don't know what you're options are for Windows. look into it.

well that's the thing - neither drive is dead. when i rebooted, it was windows that screwed me more than anything... it couldn't identify the drive, and therefore basically erased it.
i've been using major data recovery tools all day, but to no avail. unfortuantely, most of this is lost for good.

That sucks.
There are professional places that do it for $300-1000+ bucks. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. Expensive.
On the same topic, I know CDs/DVDs eventually decay so they are not readable after a few years of shelf life. What's the ideal backup solution? Tape? External Hard drives? I want my grandkids to look at the silly stuff I did in the year 2055 or so.

damn! sorry to hear that. that is pretty insane that they both went at the same time!
i saved this link a while back from someone that was having this problem. haven't really had to check into it too deeply (knock on wood) but it helped the guy who was having the problems
http://www.ontrack.com/may not help you...but anything is better than nothing i guess : \

we had some in-office drinks last friday, where i was playing some music off my 250gb external drive. after some more drinks, i accidentally pushed it of the table while it was playing.
it's dead now. lucky enough there were only mp3s on it..damn it's silent in here

(Mar 23 06, 19:48)Just because Windows doesn't see it doesn't mean it's fucked.

the data is still there as long as it's not overwritten by something else. and they can still find it even after it's been overwritten up to 4 times..
so, take it to a pro recovery shop and get it done. it cost $1000+ to get it done.
if you don't have the cash for it now, take out the drive and store it safe until you have. that's what I did, and in about month or two I have enough cash to get everything recovered.
I have around 4000 photos from the last 3 years and 6 month worth of work on there.

it was in the paper the other day that they actally salvaged data from the space shuttle when it blew up...
So all is not lost.. hopefully... good luck
