Is there a way to use the eyedropper tool in illustrator more freely, for instance if I want to select a line color that is in the fill of an object, or if I want to steal a color from an imported jpg? Thanks.

just use it. you can do both w/ the tool by default in the way you wish.

Nu-uh. Let's say I've got a red square with a blue line around it, and I want to make another square to be blue with a red border, If I use the eyedropper on the first square, I would still get a red square with blue lines :(
Or if I have a gradient and I want to pick a single color from it to use as fill color in another object; I would get the whole gradient.

shift+ctrl to pick a colour from a jpeg

Turns out shift-click alone does it. I can't believe I havn't tried that already! I feel stupid.

in CS you just click on an image and it will sample the color.

what version of IA? what platform? i can do what you are asking w/ CS.
and why use the eye dropper for job1? on Mac; option+click the object to copy easy. flip the colors on the fill/stroke arrow. done.
for job2; i place a bitmap image of any kind, use the eyedropper tool and select colors from it directly. i do it probably 30 times every single day.

PC CS2. These were just examples, what I really wanted to do (the other day, it's coming back to me now...) was to pick a color from a jpg and use it as one color in a gradient, but the shift key solved that problem for me.
But thanks, I'm a noob in AI. And for you other noobs out there I would like to pass on the tip that if you click and hold the eyedropper, you can use it on anything on your screen, provided that the Illustrator window isn't maximized.

gotcha. weird difference.
another option:
-select from jpg
- grab color selection from color palette
- drag into swatches palette
- create volume
- create gradient
- drag color (from above) into position along gradient
- done.
