I think my brain just exploded from watching this film. I thought I had it all figured out after the first twist, but then more and more came, and it was just a giant flood. Too much. I'm reading essays about it now, b/c I need to figure it out!

well my friend natacha watched this film when we were both depressed one afternoon - we watched this film and it saved us from a grouped sucide,
after months of weird late parties we got more information of it on drug up loonies and we both came to a final decision that the main female character was dreaming until she started flicking herself off

Yeah, I know about David Lynch and Naomi Watts is one of my favourite actresses. Those are the two reasons I wanted to see this film after years of it being out. Thanks though :)

Okay, here's someone's interpretation. It's long, but you have to join up and login on a site and I don't want to make ppl do that so here:
"The general plot: Diane moves to L.A. after jitterbug contest to get into acting. At an audition, she meets Camilla with whom she falls in love. Diane becomes enraged with jealousy since Camilla sleeps with other men and women. Diane discovers the other man (the director) at a film shoot and discovers the other woman (a random blond) at the engagement party for Camilla and the director. Motivated by her rage and possessiveness, Diane hires a hit man to kill Camilla. After that is done, she is overcome by loneliness and slips into an unconscious fantasy world where she lives the life she wants to. Diane is then awakened. In her conscious state she is haunted by what she has done.
The significance of the fantasy: The film starts out, after the credits, with a 1st person p.o.v. shot depicting somebody collapsing onto a bed and slipping into unconsciousness. This is where Diane's fantasy starts. The accident is there as an excuse for her to "bring back" her dead girlfriend and justify the fantasy life. She depicts her girlfriend as meek and innocent because that is what she wished she was. In the meantime, she acts like everything is "like in the movies" because she has an escapist personality. She also, in a sense, kills herself off and assumes the identity of a waitress named Betty at a diner. The story revolving around the director is a direct result of her feeling that he was in someway victimized in reality just as she was and "convinces" herself that he was forced to choose Camilla. It was also an unconscious expression of the lack of control she felt during the party. Camilla Rhoades in the fantasy is actually the random blond from the engagement party. She hated her so much that she turned her into Camilla and made the ultimate antagonist. She then took the real Camilla and turned her into a perfect, submissive out-of-the-movies girlfriend and used Rita Hayworth as an inspiration. She also paints the hit man as a very clumsy and incapable person to further justify the survival of Camilla. Her fantasy world, unfortunately for her, was a search for Diane which ended up being herself and made the dreamworld die by taking her through a series of reminders of reality. The first reminder was Club Silencio which chanted that "there is no band" and the "instruments" you hear are not really there; this is a metaphor for the fantasy. She begins to shake violently because it shakes her perception of her surroundings. The other reminder is the blue box... Actually, the blue box is not the reminder itself (more of a Pandora's Box, really), but the blue key that opens the box. The blue key reminds her of the actual death of Camilla because it is what the hit man said would show up when it was done. Along with having love, this entire creation of hers is an escape from reality by living in the idealized Hollywood that she expected to be part of when she arrived.
This is a story showing the psychology of a very troubled woman who lost a dream. It is not series of random things specifically designed to disturb and it is not a cryptic philosophical message. It is an unfortunate chunk of the human condition that is presented beautifully. "

amazing movie, and it only gets better once you actually figure out what the hell is going on
- er0k0
you will never figure it out. lynch is a genious to play with minds like he does..these things have no reason, only assumptions on what could be reasons. kind of like the series lost..so don't wrack your brain too hard on it, heh. you will never find any!
- Jaline0
Actually, he had to give clues out b/c there was a lot of pressure by the corporation who endorsed the film (by fan request), to give an explanation of what was going on. Sounds stupid, but:
1. Pay particular attention to the beginning of the film: at least two clues are revealed before the credits.
2. Notice appearances of the red lampshade.
3. Can you hear the title of the film that Adam Kesher is auditioning actresses for? Is it mentioned again?
4. An accident is a terrible event... Notice the location of the accident.
5. Who gives a key, and why?
6. Notice the robe, the ashtray, the coffee cup.
7. What is felt, realised and gathered at the club Silencio?
8. Did talent alone help Camilla?
9. Note the occurrences surrounding the man behind 'Winkies'
10. Where is Aunt Ruth?

know what I noticed? how both Nicole Kidman's and Naomi Watts' exes (Tom Cruise and Heath Ledger, respectively) have impregnated stars of Dawson's Creek, all within this year. Heath is with Michelle Williams (Jen in the series), and Tom is with Katie (who was Joey). Hahahaha. So random...but sooo funny.

This movie was pretty boss. Though, however, I find myself not enjoying movies when people say how hard it is to figure out or follow, because then all I do is overthink every aspect of the movie while it is going on. :X
- Jaline0
I know what you mean. I actually end up thinking about the film for days and days, and it sometimes distracts me from other things. Because I want to know how it all links together. Maybe it's because we're into the arts and I'm an English student or something, haha. Anyway, this film is really awesome. I think it may be the most complicated film I have ever seen, after Memento, which I analyzed for a quite a long time as well.
- flavorful0
Memento is the only movie ever that I have gotten up and left.
I couldn't stand it. It seemed like every scene was the same exact thing from a different camera angle, I felt like I was the only sane person on Earth for doing so, haha.
- Jaline0
Really? I loved that film! One of my favourites, because it's just so brilliant once you piece everything together. On the DVD you can actually watch it in chronological order, but I haven't done that yet even though I have it.
- flavorful0
Hrm ... perhaps I'll try and give it a second chance. It has been a few years.
- _me_0
why hasn't the hispanic/opera singer never got anymore work???
- Mimio0
Dude, she died. member?
- vwsung18t0
nicole kidman and naomi watts are lovers. nicole kidman is really a man. this make the rumors that tom cruise is gay valid.
- Jaline0
In the film, yeah. I'm not sure, but I do know that Rebekha DelRio's song was originally done by Roy Orbison originally (the song is called 'Crying'), and covered by Don McLean years later - both in English.
