how much should I charge?

a girl from work's husband wants me to do some freelance work for him (he owns a small recruitment firm that is newly launched). He wants me to do some marketing collateral plus some stationary (bus cards, letterhead etc) for him. I havnt really done any freelance before, how much should I charge?? Just what my current rate is with my full time job or should I charge more?

consider extra expenses, Taxes, power, software, and base yourself from that.
It also depends where you are, remember it is all about location location location... if you are in NY you cant charge 10 bucks per hour, if you are down south there is no way anyone is going to pay 100 bucks per hour...
Sooo.... good luck. oh and btw dont go too low or people will start to know you buy "the guy that guy that charges really cheap" instead of "go with that guy he is really good".

i tend to just pull random numbers out of my ass when giving people quotes
depending on how much i like them, how much i think they have, and what i've been wanting to buy lately

$50 an hour - if it's a friend/associate.
just make sure you spell 'stationery' correctly or he may think you dont know what you're on about.

Your rate is less important than your quoting. Many clients like to hear a low rate and are happy to pay whatever it costs as long as they feel they're getting a good rate - just allow plenty of extra time for stuffing around with a startup - they won't have their business plan, company goals, vision, etc. all set out yet so guaranteed they're going to still be in 'deciding mode' and not know what they want until they see it. Add 50% extra hours in your quote - you will use them.
