"Katrina's winds have left behind an information vacuum. And that vacuum has been filled by rumour."

Parasalene - it was a second hand account from a friend. He's no reason to lie.

i believe what happened in the Superdome is a rather unique event, i don't think you would see this in many other western 'civilized' nations. In fact you are taking a rather ignorant stance if you do not see what happened there as something that should not have occured at all in the US, instead just pointing a finger, pfft..it's only Nola, not us. I think Katrina revealed only the tip of the iceberg of what is wrong in society, and how the government fails to invest in, and support, a more balanced society.
Scary, really scary.
What would a civil war look like?
Kind of like New Orleans?

How many countries round the world have the US attacked pre-emptively? Answer: more than the Nazis.

The main reason that the staduim was filled with such people was that the evacuation effort before the storm was only really for the rich middle classes (who happen to be predominantly white). This left a poorer group of people who had to cope with the situation. Most of the people who were in the dome were good and honest. The problem was that the crack-heads needed a place to shelter too. And as far as I know there wasn't a ready supply of drugs in there for them. That and the fact that they had just lost their homes made them desperate and mad.
What I find interesting is the US's lack of planning and budget for the Katrina:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magaz…
the Red Cross is wants everyone to give the US money:
"The gross national income of the US is $37,870 per capita, according to the World Bank. It is just $810 for tsunami-hit Indonesia and $200 for poverty-stricken Niger. "
doesn't really seem fair.

Of course it's bred from lack of education / jobs / upbringing etc, but at some point you'd hope that human decency just takes over.

"I'm sure that most Americans are decent people, but they must be decent apathetic people to continue with the regime in the US."
Unlike us english who have done something about Tony, his government and their part in the Iraq war.

Exactly.
Now take this a step further, has it come this far that some of these people are so incredibly poor that insanity will take over rationale?
The US has consciously chosen for the meritocratic and almost perverted capitalism, which has it's terrible downsides.
Has this got to do with the fact that any thought that could be considered socialistic has always been filed under "communist"?
Is the horror towards anything more social and less capitalistic so deeply rooted in the American system?

have you ever been to a nasty inner city area in the US might I ask? sadly, to their own downfall, most of them are heavily dominated by certain ethnic groups that are up to no good.

i think the US really digs the idea of the indivduals rights etc etc which is good but it seems to be at the exspense of the idea of all these individuals living in a society that has to look out for one another
