It's interesting as I see the same difference in Islam now - Sunnis/shias (and the sufis, etc..making up the rest).
Islam is basically where Christianity was five hundred years ago in terms of growing pains - and the subsequent political power grab using religion as a basis of power.
The Christian world basically came to grips with it a while back, interesting to see how some people want to drag us back into that internecine fighting...

What defines religion? Base texts? Shared resource? Or practice, worship and the physical engagement with the real world as a result of those practices?

(Aug 25 05, 08:48)dude, I know what you mean, I'm not saying they are the same, but they are the same religion and were the same church too for a very very long time. Now they are different in a lot of ways, but man; not that different, not if compared to other religions, say bhuddism and what was over here before Christianity.
maybe I'm not personaly invololved enough to draw finer distinctions (it's not my place anyway). Be well one and all, I'm out of this one :)

I happen to find Jesus and Buddha pretty damn simialr in terms of base teachings - different emphasis on the role of suffering, but not all that far off in terms of intent of message.
In fact Jesus and Buddha are probably a lot closer than say Luther and a Pope are on most issues...

I am right douchbag. Give me a fucking break and cut me some slack. You're letting your hatred for me obscure your judgement of what I say and you take everything out of context.
Can't we just be friends? Give me your address and I'll send you a friend joint.

My opinion is that true scripture-based Christianity cannot even be categorized as "religion" in the truest sense. It would be erroneous to speak of it comparativley along side Islam, Hinduism, etc... This is because Biblical Christianity is not performance-based ritualism, but rather it is an undeserved relationship based on grace alone. Christ's claim to deity/savior and his resurrection, stand in stark contrast to the dead prophets of world religions who promoted a system of performance-based righteousness.

doesn't mean that Christ does not share similarities in teaching principles of morality and love, with the leaders of world religions. However, the motivation was not to earn favor with God, but because of favor with God... based on faith alone.
