hey Antione, it depends on who your market is, make sure that your clients or potential clients will be able to view it, 800*600 is quite popular but it doesn't have to be so.
make it scalable is your best bet, that way it holds a look per resolution.

for 800 x 600 i like to do at 770X400 pixels on photoshop, height dont really matter though
but most monitors now are at a default of 1024x768. for that width i like to do at 980px wide

ahem! ill take one of those MX if you dont mind...
also a print designer..got a site with flash, but wanna learn css/html
- Kevin_Sweeney0
you actually want to be designing at 760x420 for 800x600 resolutions (if you check Dreamweaver's bottom right corner it lists the dimensions for webpage resoltuions.) I forget what 1024x768 is, but that's in there as well.
If you're just using this as a portfolio to show other design firms, you can be 99% certain that they will be viewing on 1024 or higher. Unless you plan on sending potential freelance clients to the site, I don't think you really need to design for 800x600.

another silly question - how do i make it scaleable so that it always centers horizontally?
- lvl_130
are you using flash or html...or both?
- DesignStamp0
you may want to check out css resources such as http://glish.com/css/
you could end up making pretty things s
uch as those shown at http://www.cssbeauty.com, http://www.stylegala.com.
- MX_OnD0
I started with the "HTML Utopia tableless design with CSS"
from sitepoint.com
have never bought another CSS book thereafter but only read up online.

(Aug 17 05, 19:37)just html at this stage. kinda learning on the way as I go. no real experience with web, all my work I have done is print. have some books I can look up at home, when I get home, but if anyone knows the quick answer that would be great

if you're a print designer, why not make your portfolio into a .pdf and just point people to where they can download it?

(Aug 17 05, 21:53)because I wanna learn web. I see this as an exercise that will teach me and then I will have a bit more experience with it should a client as me to do some basic web for them.
- agentfour0
make a table that is 100% wide and plonk whatever you want in the middle alligned centre.
- MX_OnD0
don't use tables.
If you have yet to start then your best bet is to learn the "proper" way, using DIVs and CSS.
I will send you an email with some suggestions for this in a couple of minutes, any questions don't be frightened to email me back.
