Hi, I've just moved to LA from the UK and looking for a 1 bed apartment. I've looked at a few in Santa Monica and West LA which seem ok. I've been warned off Venice, although it seems quite cool in a touristy kinda way, that might wear off though. Santa Monica seems relatively expensive.
I've used Craig's list and Westside rentals. Just looking for some insider knowledge from you locals. I know from living in London for years that new arrivals often make bad decisions, and once you know the place it makes finding something decent much easier.
cheers
Ben

i know you said no to venice but there is a kick ass flat there i just walked by yesterday a 1bd for 1500 with parking right on the sand. out your front window would be the ocean

best thing to do.. find the streets you like and drive around
you'll see a lot of for rent signs.
most of those apts never make it to caigslist or westside rentals.
i found my last apartment that way and its awesome! im moving at the end of the month.. i plan on finding my next apartment the same way. i already know which streets and neighborhoods i like.

whoah ben - what are you doing in LA! Move there for work?

You're going to be driving to West Hollywood all the time, no matter where you are in LA.
If you live in Venice or Santa Monica, you'll curse the traffic all the livelong day. It's prettier there, but if you plan to go out and do shit, do Hollywood.

totally depends on where you work. You mosdef want to live closeby. I live in NOHO where rents are still reasonable, and its pretty central. You can get to Burbank Hollywood, teh VAlley, and tehg beach pretty quick. I like it.

before renting a place.. i suggest doing a drive by at night before the lease is signed...
take 15 minutes and smoke a cig outside... around 9-10 o clock. you'll be able to see if the neighborhood is quiet, crazy, retarded or cool and night before a commitment is made.
i require dead silence on my street... anything else keeps me up for ages. I found a nice a liked.. and found out that at night, its chock full of college brats from UCLA and its hella loud.

Venice one sounds nice, got any details? Love to be near the beach, don't mind being a bit of a tourist. Id 1500 expensive for LA? Suppose you pay much more for being near the beach? I heard at nice vencie turns into a war zone and you get shot for looking out the windows?:)

Jevad, yeah work for a year... Do I know you?
- highrise0
Yeah will definitely check the place out at night before I sign.

check back to this thread or i'll just email it to you

Venice has it's ghetto parts, just take Shellie's advice. go by at night.
1500 is about average, but 4 example I pay around 1500 but I get parking, my own wash/dry in my apt, a balcony, gym, pool, etc.
In venice you may get a closet kitchen and some old carpet. BUT, you're by the beach

ahhhhhh ewo you hater! :D
----traffic going west to east is WAY better than east to west after work and such. getting around on a daily basis to go to the store and do your buisness is a pain in hollywood. its always crazy there.. and nothing sucks more than having people who don't belong on your street fucking shit up, taking all the parking (so you or your guests have to walk for blocks).. etc.
i have friends that live in fairfax village i visit a few times a week after work. I work and live in santa monica and take wilshire to beverly blvd to 3rd and it takes me all of 15-20 minutes to get clear across town. by town.. i mean passing through at least 3 cities.
traffic? psshaw!
plus.. 80% of the firms in LA (for web and motion graphics) are west hollywood and west. many of them are in beverly hills, culver city, west LA and good ol santa monica.
but also, if youre already hired somewhere, if your job is on the east side, why torture yourself. live by work.
p.s. there's plenty of good places to go hang out on the west side. i know a bunch of people who hardly make it east of lincoin.

Soler, yes it seems the closer to the beach you get less for you money
- shellie0
you can make a happy compromise.. move to west LA and only be a 5 minute drive from the beach. cheaper rent or if not cheaper.. more for your money.
west LA starts east of centinela, and is one city inland from santa monica.

Definitely pick your neighborhood based on work location or you will regret it. If you have to get on the 405 to get to and from the office everyday you will very quickly find yourself going crazy.
I'd also recommend avoiding the valley if you can afford it. 818 = poop-poop-poop.

just say YES to Westwood

I'm working up near Century City off Santa Monica Blvd. My girlfriends main office is near the airport LAX and also ventura blvd. The traffic does seem busy here, but nothing compared with londons pure chaos, also there are no corners everything is square so driving around is quite easy.
