how funny vb_
that's almost exactly the same as my career path... started out as a photographer, fell into graphic design because there was no way i could afford my own photographic studio/equipment in london, wanted to be able to do it all myself and knowing flash paid well at the time.

haha true vespa.
"and knowing flash paid well at the time."
i can't believe the first site i did, it was so simple (and ugly when i look back at it now).. but i got 5k for it, without hesitation from the clients side. i was so happy with it at the time.
in that same period friends of mine who have this large design studio made 100k (!!!!!!!!!!!) with a ridiculously simple and average by graphic design flash based website.
silly times.

I did Eng Lit at Uni, then cleaned schools for a living, then gutted clams for a living, then started doing posters for a friends club night, then got The Fear about my direction and latched onto Graphics as the answer.
Glad I did, it's worked out pretty good. I have little time for those who claim I "havn't paid my dues" lol.

good for you kelpie!
graphic design seems a profession you don't choose, but that you need to discover. innit?

I think it helped me get a perspective on the practicalities of our proffession, a lot of the theory taught is wonderful and high-thinking but doesn't really apply to the "real world" which can be pretty compromised. And slimy in my case :)
