aren't we all self taught? i have a design degree but i still consider myself to be self taught on all the important stuff. i didn't learn much at uni compared to the working world.
i'd like to think AIGA are hoping to stimulate debate rather than being elitist.

I am self-destructive but I don't refer to myself as a designer.

It didn't read to me like they were genuinly having a go at self taught designers. Nobody else get the immpression it was the other way around?
Don't know jack about AIGA though, do they really come over like that generaly?!
eek if so :(
(self taught incidentaly)
(and bloody brilliant, obviously ;)

I dont think the degree is the important thing about a design degree course... The important stuff for me the experience of learning alongside architects and other design courses, being immersed in a culture of design, the history of design, being introduced to a wider view of design, and also ideals/vision about what design can do in society... (sort of like 'a calling').... I dont see how a self-taught designer is going to do that, unless its through working closely with other designers in the right sort of business with the right mix of talented and experienced people but then why not do it at a good design school?
and it's fun!

i am starting to think that it's meant to spark disussion. But even so, it does so at the expense of people who are not in the 'club,' and under the flag of a widely respected agency that is supposed to promote open-mindedness.
I can go and write an article about socioeconomics and how all designers are bad because 'they' perpetuate the pop culture machine, thus increasing worldwide child labor exploitation, but doing so under the flag of the AHD (Association of Hack Designers) means that's what the AHD stands for, no? Ultimately, it's an opinion, and I would think AIGA would take the high road on such a matter. But then, that's not AIGA's style.
you know, i don't know if i'm making sense anymore. i think i'm just typing to see myself type. i need sleep.
whoa...good morning, europe!

I am getting my degree in Graphic Information Technology, which is a bachelors of science. Mainly, this is a degree for those who want to manage graphic production. I do see those who take design school as very patient people, as I studied graphic design for a month, but hated the painting, drawing, and what not. I wanted to be around technology, and unfornately the ASU graphic design program dos not offer this. Although, I do believe that teaching myself through study and reading, my designs can be just as good as those are in a "true" design program.

it's not a bad essay but it's somewhat irrelevant if you ask me.
- vb_0
can we keep it to one thread please?
- kelpie0

yeah I'm not really understanding the argument or the author's opinoin on the whole subject. Actually the whole thing doesn't make a lot of sense to me nor do I find it interesting but its really stoking a fire for some.

it's about corporativism and self-esteem not really about design itself.
design is out of control, it's on the streets, and it brings a lot of head-aches to the established academics. Being a socially important person by way of the profession of design has come to an end, and that means a whole lot of people is pissed off.

sorry VB..
It sounds curmudgeonly and outdated.

But I think this is happening in a lot fields right now that information is so easily available. I think physics would be so much easier to study learning stuff at home now on the internet looking at different schools papers in addition to the classes I took. Its not just graphic design. Computer programmers can be self taught. Its much easier to learn now. In a way its good because only those who really care about what their into will be good at it.

I totally identify with waht your saying in the other thread about guilt _vb. I am self taught through nessessity (sp?). I had to produce 12" single sleeves and we could not afford to pay for it. it was a disaster but one that I learned from. I've gone on to produce CD inlays and digipack artwork, but I wouldn't call myself a designer. I call the people who post shit here designers. NT sets the bar in my opinion, so many talented peeps here, shit I'm rambling. l8rz.

haha, i hear ya. i rolled into it since i got frustrated as a photographer, my creative freedom was too limited. i also experienced many cases in which found the design in which photographs were placed was horrible, a real shame at times.
i was seducted by the idea of learning graphic design to be able to master that myself.
I must say when i started my company most was webdesign, simply because at the time it paid really well. (dotcom boom era)..
