Have you ever done it? What was involved? Did you move yourself, use movers? Did the company pay?
Help a brotha out.

I misread your post. I've only once had to move due to job reasons however. Your company, if it a fair company, should cover at least 90% of it I would think. Always use movers, although your friends are friendly, they REALLY dont want to help you move.

1. yes

3. yes
4. no

yeah, company should cover the expense of moving. that's if you are moving from their london office to nyc office or something similar.
i am not sure if a company will cover the moving expense if they are hiring you for the first time. if you are a super designer and working for a global company, yes. but otherwise suck it up.

a lot of freight companies do moving as well. they'll drop a container at your place that you fill yourself, then drop it at your new place for you to unload. a good balance of cost vs labor.

I didn't know they don't do it first timers, but yes, I am a super designer working for a global company, so they better ante up. Haha.

cheers,
regardless, you should always ask. i ask rediculous things like "can i have a friday off every other week?" or "i think i am just gonna work from home this week, I'll be more creative." and they'll give to me not always, but i am winning game more and more.where you moving from and to?

I already asked about working from home. They are cool with that. Moving from LA to DC.

that's quite a move. hope all goes well regardless. what firm?

not eveyone pays, but i've always leveraged it. you should to. if they really want you, what's an extra $1000 or so to move somebody??

So, let's say a company wants to hire you and move from East to West Coast.
What are the usual negotiating points? Do they pay for all your moving expenses? Relocation bonus? etc..?

@OSFA / A few years ago I was relocated from the west to east coast and was given a relocation bonus of $15,000. This allowed me to ship over the big things (some small furniture and boxes), pay for airfare, and cover my first/last month's rent, security deposit and/or broker fees. The catch was that if I left the company within the first 6 months, I'd owe it all back, if I left within a year I'd owe 1/2 back, and within 18 months something like 1/4 back. I'd say this is reasonable. The only bitch was that after taxes, it was actually $10,000 and not enough.

So, relocation bonuses do help, but they have to be well planned and hopefully sans big catch. How about housing? Is the employer supposed to help or are you on your own? After all, you're in a complete new world...
- They left me on my own for finding housing. The "catch" actually makes sense or else I'd be using the job offer to relocate for free.monospaced

If they recruit you, they should def. pay moving expenses.
If you apply for a job, they should only pay if it is a high level position, because you will be valuable.
If you are moving to a different office within a company, they should pay, especially if it's not entirely your decision.

If it's a global company they probably have people who take care of relocation. I've done it twice across country and they have a way to minimize the tax burdon. Part of relocation for Amazon and Microsoft includes putting the employee up for a period of time while you look for a place. Definitely check out what might be available to you.
