well, if you ask a Dutch person they'd raise their eyebrows and think twice..
but for foreigners it's 'the shit' apparently..
:D
anyway, i think it's all very hidden here. you don't SEE it. i mean physically.
The Netherlands by landscape and landmarks is mostly a very monotonous and boring country..
It always makes me wonder, so many great designers/architects etc. here, while it is in a way not so inspiring..
on the other more abstract level of culture and process (growth, change etc.) this is quite a fascinating country, as it's constantly trying to reinvent it's identity.. has got to do with our major dependencies of other cultures since we have been and always will be a country of international trade.
i must also say the enthousiasm for our status qua as a 'design nation' in the Netherlands itself is rather disappointing, most people don't even know we are so much appreciated abroad.

----------------And yet there must be some underlying element in the culture that allows for such a design-friendly environment (compared to places like Canada - and yes, I know "the grass is always greener ..").
The kind of work that happens in NL (and many other parts of Europe) especially in architecture - just could not happen here - it wouldn't be *allowed* to happen .. the public wouldn't support it, the local government wouldn't support it ...

Have you guys heard anything about Winka//Archi-Tectonics?
she isn't that major of a name but
just curious.

Canada, especially Toronto seems like it's got one hell of a design scene going. but i'm an outsider.
:-)

jondj24 - not in a while - not lately.
I do have one of her mini-monographs -- IIRC there's no built work in it lol
- ivan_cook0
jondj24 - i think they were in the same article as Lindy Roy. Was it in "Architecture?"
hmm. can't remember, but it was an article about 5 or so newish NYC firms. rave reviews of Lindy Roy.

solid.. i could start telling.. but it won't end... :)
but if you really want to get only a slight clue of the what Dutch design is about and why it works (cause it puzzles us all, even the Dutch themselves..), read this book:
http://youworkforthem.com/produc…
it's a great read and lots and lots of images covering graphic, product, industrial design and architecture...

--------------LOL I guess it's all relative :D
Most of the interesting arch. lately is being done by foreign architects in partnership with locals - although I'm sure a lot of locals would disagree ;)
Libeskind, Gehry, Foster, Alsop, Behnisch ... all have projects going or recently completed.
Saucier+Perrotte from Montreal are doing some really nice work as well:
http://www.saucierperrotte.com/Lately I've been hearing some noise from the furniture/industrial design scene as well .. which is something considering I don't know anyone involved in that area - other than MrDinky :D
- ivan_cook0
jondj24 - have you seen these people?
Specht Harpman
http://www.spechtharpman.com/they still have a firm in NYC, but she is our associate dean here.
they have some really interesting projects incorporating "found" materials.
- Solid0
Who were popular and often imitated at your school?
- ivan_cook0
hmm, that's a hard one....
maybe Zumthor, Libeskind, Siza, MVRDV, OMA, UN Studio, probably think of some more in a sec...
- ivan_cook0
here's what i was talking about before with Specht Harpman:
