What is much more difficult to learn in either medium is actual creative, original thinking .... It will never be easy to excell. It will never be easy to consistantly surprise and delight regardless of whether your medium is type or drawing.

Drawing can be learned.
Type can be learned.
What is much more difficult to learn in either medium is actual creative, original thinking. Anyone can copy good drawing styles or follow in the footsteps of say modernism. But not everyone is Paul Rand. Not everyone is Anita Kuntz. It will never be easy to excell. It will never be easy to consistantly surprise and delight regardless of whether your medium is type or drawing.Illustrators they say have a love affair with the human form whereas designers have a love affair with typography. Both of these take a lifetime to master.

Dan: I'm simply asking the following - "what does 'know how to draw' mean?"; "why does 'drawing' have to be confined to analog media?"; "how can we explain designers who don't/can't/won't draw who still surpass those who do?".
I just don't see a direct correlation between "drawing" and "design", nor do I see the need for one. In other words, I'm leery of saying things like "designers SHOULD know how to draw".

not meant to be harsh.
i agree to some extent with him..
but one part sounded awfully generalizing imho..

I think you may be reaching Solid. It could be argued the topic--and it's detail-- is more than obvious.
"Usually those starting with computer instead of paper & pencil dont have as much of an understanding of laying out things..."
I disagree.
This is a very generalized statement; can you elaborate by providing examples?

I know alot of graphics designers that are self-taught artists. I am a true beleiver in- starting out drawing before so that u have some graphic ideas to stem from.
Usually those starting with computer instead of paper & pencil dont have as much of an understanding of laying out things, but at the same time, u should really try everything when in this buisness. You'll never know, u may run into that client that is looking for a drawing with type over it that might be willing to give away 1 mil for your services.

There are too many blanket statements being made IMO. No one has really described/defined what they mean by "drawing"? (or "design" for that matter).
For example - the current QBN certified "BULLETIN GEEL METALLIEK" image - is drawing an essential part of that solution?
Does "drawing" mean freehand with a pencil on paper? Or with a tablet and Illustrator? Or how about AutoCAD? Are you cheating if you can't draw a proper architectural perspective without a straight edge?

I used to be able to, recently started life drawing classes in work which are great, really enjoyed the last one which was taught by an animator and was alll about capturing the shape and line very quickly. she said that we should nail the shape of the figure in 5 secs which was a bit tough but lovely to do. anatomy next week.

if there weren't computers i would have never become a designer.
i have some kind of physical disorder which screws up my handdrawing/writing etc. bigtime.. also i write with left while i am supposed to write with my right hand..
and i cannot play most musical instruments..
long story.
anyway..
long live computers!!!!!

I find it funny how designers get so defensive. :P
But I don't think that all good designers can draw well. I think being able to sketch is imortant, but drawing isnt critical, that's what illustrators are for.
But i'm just a hack so whatever.

What nick says = true:
"I do however think that one must draw type to be able to fully understand it [not necessarily draw it well, but more as an excercise]."
Good advice too.

alot of good drawers/illustrators find themselves moving into graphic design and they pick it up quickly because they already have a good eye for composition.

Designer Question
Can all good designers draw well?
redant
(Mar 18 05, 15:03)No. Natural drawing ability and being a good designer are not mutually exclusive.
On the other hand, I'd say that it definitely helps. I wish I was good at drawing, but I am not.
I do however think that one must draw type to be able to fully understand it [not necessarily draw it well, but more as an excercise].
