now that got your attention.
so i am looking for another internal or external HD, but i wonder if bigger means also better. I've seen a 500GB external HD at a friends place, but then i wonder..shouldn't i spend some time in throwing away files and shit?
i mean what's the point in saving so much rubbish? and what if it 'melts down'?
that makes me curious, who else here has a lot of garbage that you never use/watch/hear on their HD's.. and how much of it??

i'll show you mine if you show me yours :P

My mass storage tops out at 160-ishGB and I find it helps to be able to do big system backups, like saving my entire home folder before reformatting. Besides a couple versions of this and some other extra things, I agree, what's the point? If you're not hoarding lots of video, audio, or other big deal data, then the only benefit, at least in my eyes, is the ability to not have to delete things as frequently.
I say get double your internal size and you'll be plenty happy.

I'll let you know on monday what we have at work. It's not 500GB but if you're thinking of doing some spring cleaning, maybe this one will still do.

bigger doesn't always mean better. if you have the kind of budget to get 500 mb, why not try to get something smaller but with RAID (i.e. dual hard drive). in case one of them melts, you will always have the other one.
at work i have a 160GB Data Security RAID 1 (2 x 160GB HDDs)

I was drooling over the Lacie terrabyte external HD, then the reality of backing it up set in. I decided to stay disciplined about burning archives and staying organized. I have 400 gb for the g4 tower, 120 on my PC and a 120 external for the powerbook (80 internal).

opps, 60 internal on the powerbook

yeah, i am talking early spring cleaning here..
was thinking of either an external HD or a new DVD burner.. mine is so old, like 1x speed write and only for DVD-R discs while DVD+R discs are so much cheaper..
hmmm...

by the way, anyone familiar with fujifilm DVD-R discs??
when they sold me thse they told me they are almost unbeatable in quality..
but i have burned one with a gazillion small files on it and i cannot open it.. i just get the eternal beachball of death on my Mac.. :(

i've known of many external hard drives that have gone kaput. including my 300 dollar 40 gig one. :/
i believe you have to treat them like babies made of egg shell or something.
maybe investing in server space is less risky?

damn, i have a DVD project folder with so many files.. it's like over 37 GB (!) of resources for only one 20 minute video..
i am not sure what files i can throw away and which not.. :/
i hate thse sort of dilemma's..
but like hell i am going to burn like 10 dvd's at one speed for that shit!!
- danthon0
Hmmm the media manager in final cut works great, not sure about dvd studio though...
- janne0
yeah, but apart from that.. there's pieces and models for the intro animation and shit.. guess i have to weed it out all by myself.. :/
but thx for the advice!

I have a 250 gig external and have not come near filling it up.
But the reason is...I burn DVDs also for safe keeping. DVDs are much more safe than a Harddrive.
Use DVDs for archiving things.. backing up everything.
Pretty much its smart to not have all your files just on your HD.
If you back up regularly 300 gigs should be plenty

Also, using DVDs is a good idea in that you can keep them off-site. Comes in handy in those worst case scenario situations, like fire or burglary.

damn, i better get me a faster dvd writer then.. i don't want another 18 hours of burning DVD's at 1x speed..
:(

i have 2 internal HD's.. can i completely re-install os-x without touching the second HD, ie using it as a backup HD?
