designing sites for 800x600 is kinda old. but as long as you design them right, they should look ok on larger resolutions.
i have a 20" widescreen cinema with areso @ 1680x1050

over 70% of the world is still at 800x600, so how is that resolution old?

760x440 or 760x570 dependent on target audience, the later aimed at Dezigners™.

I recently doing this main page design for a bank in a res of 1024X768 in a 17inch monitor. Besides having a crappy workspace be4cause it is so small, I found it better to design in this resolution. so my question is at what res do u do your designs?
and btw have any of you notice there is a slight non proportional scaling in 1280X1024. so widescreen is way to go.

unless you know that you have a very sepcific audience that is abnormal (ie. newstoday)
http://www.w3schools.com/browser…
and although you may have been using 1024 or higher for years, not eveybody is the same. the fact is that you can make a 760px image look good in a 1024 browser, but you cant make a 1024px image look good in a 800px browser.
you dig?
according to Zeldman - if you choose to build for resolutions above 800x600, you are deciding that 37% of teh population will never be your customers.TR1

its not about the size of your monitor (i HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO ALMOST EVERY CLIENT) its the resolution its set to. i can have a 42inch plazma screen set to 640px! stats supplied by www.echoecho.com say that its split 50/50 (almost) between 800x600/1024x768 so what you'll find if you OPEN YOUR EYES is that most people design for 760wide with important info being displayed above the "fold" at 400 (leaving 20 pixels or so for rogue browser menus and microsoft rubbish with secondary info being available below 400px

Your audience will not neccessarily be average.
Our online magazine audience: Less than 14% on screens 800x600 or smaller.
Around 20% on screens 1600x1200 or larger
