its not about the size of your monitor (i HAVE TO EXPLAIN THIS TO ALMOST EVERY CLIENT) its the resolution its set to. i can have a 42inch plazma screen set to 640px! stats supplied by www.echoecho.com say that its split 50/50 (almost) between 800x600/1024x768 so what you'll find if you OPEN YOUR EYES is that most people design for 760wide with important info being displayed above the "fold" at 400 (leaving 20 pixels or so for rogue browser menus and microsoft rubbish with secondary info being available below 400px
