there's this thing (i believe it is standard in Panther, and optional for download somewhere) that make you type a letter for a app and either opens the app or shows a list of options. i have seen it working on the iBook of a friend and it's very efficient.
he ditched the dock completely.
but i forgot the name of the utility..
anyone?

if you're running Panther, a cool thing is setting up a user for each kindof work you do. like you could have a web user, that would have golive, ps, flash, etc, in the dock and running and switch when you needed it.......

I put less frequently used stuff and FTP bookmarks 'n stuff in multiple layers and multiple docks in...

so you use both Mail AND Entourage?
That must be a pain in the ass.
AND you use EVERY Adobe app and EVERY Macromedia app?
And Maya?
AND all those mediaplayers?
AND all the Office Apps?
AND Quark? Now, I can see that you use Carracho, Poison and Limewire often . . .
But you really use all of those apps on a daily or weekly basis?
I think not.

You may have a lot of apps in the doc ~50, but it isn't full... my doc has ~100 apps in it... and it is fine... yeah I don't use them all the time, some very rarely, but it ain't full.

somebodies showing off their wares, or should I say wAr3z... how hard is apple>shift>a to open your apps folder for the not so regular apps?

yeah fuck the dock. i miss taskmenubar ):

I miss the Apple menu from OS 9.
I don't use all those apps all the time, but other than Apple's Mail, I use any of those at least once a month. When I need them, it's quicker to go to the dock to open it than going to the finder, Command Shit A or open the drive icon and opening the app folder and then clicking on the icon.
The Drag Thing looks interesting, but if the Dock can hold at least 100, then I'm good for a while.

Drag your application folder to the dock or make a folder of all your media players (or any other group) and than drag that folder to your dock... this will help you save space.
I love the dock. On the 17' Powerbook and with a smaller dock it takes little room and is a nice shortcut. I hated the OS 9 App thingy. Alt + tab in Panther is such a better chooser.
It's all preferences though and there is no right or wrong way. Panther has tons of cool ways to make your preferences work...
