dconstrukt,
be smart about it. call up the places you want to work at as if you were a client.. ask for the head of new media (or whatever you want to do).. and get his name..or you can be like.. *i need to messenger something over to the head of new media.. how do i spell their name?*
once youve got that information.. send away. if you have a really great presentation.. one that nobody can ignore.. i guarentee you will spend no more than 200 bucks if youre smart about it... and you'll get a job.,..
believe me i was in your sitation.. i just got tired of hitting my head against the wall.

and to top it off... i dont even think im that great of a designer or a programmer. both times later i was told one of the deciding factors was that i really put a lot into getting a job.. people can appreciate that.

yeah it does suck, i was in your position for over a year...decent amount of freelance work, but not enough to pay the bills. its really shitty, but hang in there..i ended up landing a flash dev job for one of the biggest oil companies in the world. make sure your stuff is current on monster and it wouldn't hurt to do a paid listing on there. i was found by a headhunting agency off my profile.
but definately do anything that you can to make your resume stand out. all of the jobs i interviewed for i was one of the 10 people chosen out of literally 1000+ resumes...and all i had was a sharp looking resume and a couple letters of reccomendation. but most people don't even do that, so it works.

i mean - all it took to start from working from our houses from moving into a pimp office 6 months later was him selling/managing clients and me doing all creative - although disadvantages are:
- you work 12 hour days
- constantly thinking about work
- alot of corporate accounts
