i am having issues with outline text in illustrator 10.
i test print before converting to outlines, and it looks fine.
after i convert it, all of the text looks much thicker. it is as if the regular fonts went to ultra bold.
i know that the fonts generally appear a little thicker on screen after the conversion, but i dont think that they should print that way.
could this happen as a result of the font suitcase, or is it soem little setting or something?
i have tested it on 2 computers, and 2 printers.thanks,

its probably given it an outline.

outline , as in Stroke?
what would cause it to do that?
- unknown0
yeah a stroke maybe - dunno why I'm more of a freehand man really..
- heavyt0
it doesnt show that there is a stroke on the text.
thanks, anyway, for trying.TR1

Print it out.
You shouldn't see any difference.
- heavyt0
yeah, that is what i thought.
but, there is a BIG differnece when i print it out.
I have never had a problem like this before.

Oh, sorry. you already did that.
umm.. lemme try somethin.
- Gorbie0
what font you using?
- unknown0
It could be the font.. Ive had fonts where after I converted to outlines (in freehand of course) the characters changed |:

Just a thought: copy the text to a new document and print it out. Is it still thick?
Then take it from there...

Try a different font - then you'll know if it's a bodgey font or not.

Is the text grouped, or is there something behind it?
Is the text a CMYK build? Or rich black?
Did you change the color of the text using the eyedropper tool?
- heavyt0
the text is grouped , and there are files placed behind
CMYK build
i dont use the eyedropper tool

i've had the exact same problem heavyt. I dont know what the answer is but i tried everything. I have used outlined fonts on quite a few print jobs and tested them out on printers and they do make the text look thicker. Im pretty sure its not a font problem(because ive done it to heaps of fonts), its just what happens when its converted to outlines.
The jobs came out fine when printed professionally however i really had nothing to compare it with, so im not sure.
Keen for an answer on this one.

WELL, after calling my printer,
here is his synopsis;
sometimes when fonts are very small, illustrator has a tough time converting them, and kinda adds a stroke to them.
solution:
dont convert it to outlines, include fonts with the file.
that is the best answer that i have come up with thus far.thanks for all of the help,

Its because that the hinting that is build into a font is lost when you convert it to outlines. However I still do it all the time, just got this thing in 11 pt DIN Engschrift back from the printer and even tho the font looks thicker on screen and on the printer, its perfect on the final thing. Why it looks slightly thicker on an $80.000 digital printer and not when its offset printing I dont know - it just seem to work.
