i have been looking like a madman for design jobs here in south fla.
so i was on the aiga site and found a listing...sent them an email, telling them where i graduated from and with a link to my portfolio.
http://www.ultimatemarketingmini…
guess what?
I got an email back, telling me to call him on mon.
heres the response, i'd appreciate any opinions of how to deal with it at this point:
--------------------------------...
Give me a call Wednesday and we can talk more about your experience.I viewed the sites you listed and while the banner work is nice, I would
need to see more about what you can do design wise and skill wise.I will tell you I respect the business niche the sites that you showed
represent, but the writing is way to “miracle product” oriented for my
tastes. Nevertheless, the partners are probably making a fortune.Call me Wednesday...
--------------------------------...I'm not sure if he looked at the entire portfolio, cause I have some logos and some print work there.
I realize the sites are marketing based, but hey, I gotta pay the bills.
comments? suggestions?

show what exactly what he asked to see and dont be an asshole. prepare everything you want to show him before you call.
congrats

mcLeod:
I'm not sure what to prepare. I have a decent amount of work on the site, so I was a bit surprised when he said that he needs to hear/find out more about what I'm capable of.
I think my work was better than the companys stuff on the site.
then again we all think our work is the best....LOL.
thanks for the tips.

please! show your skills in typography and design, not the DOT.COM bullshit most kids come into interviews with, your knowledge of classic typgraphy, color theory, grids, etc. etc. the basics of design will gain respect and impress, there's a huge lack of kids that come out of school that understand what good design is and the difference from the crap that's generally on the internet. you don't necessarily HAVE to have the awesome work in your portfolio YET, but letting them know that you aren't a n00b and that you "get" what design is.. (problem solving, concepts not shit graphics)
good luck, your identity work is really strong and it shows your maturity, focus on that.

Sauerbraten: thanks for the tips. My teacher (whos well known in the ad world) used to drill into my head:
"you need a Great idea."
"You can't polish turd."
"IF you polish a turd, its STILL a turd"
"Typography CAN NOT be an afterthought."
"Love photography."
Hopefully, I've used some of that with my work. I'm still learning every day,and i'm passionate about what I do.
Hopefully my work reflects this.
Thank you for the compliment on the ID work....that means alot coming from other designers, and especially ones you respect.
I wonder if my print stuff sucks though.

i just got out of school in '02 but i've seen and learned alot from creative directors and people in the hiring position as to what they look for. it's sad with all the NEW media, the focus in many new designers is not the basics–the foundation of design, it's in the next coolest way to do a intertia-mouse chasing navigation..
you know what i mean, study great designers and typographers of the last century and beyond, you'll see why they're considered 'great'
cheers

Sauerbraten:
I hear ya dude. while I love all the new cool shit, I think being simple is best. I dont give a fuck about the "tricks" people do now adays for the sake of doing.
I think everything is to be designed for a reason. whats going to solve the problem, whats going to help the client get to his goal.
thats what design is for. not to just make something look cool.
I'm a fan of swiss design...love it.

If you're a designer, you shouldn' t feel responsible for the writing on those sites. Even if you did write that material, would you be doing that for him? If not, don't claim that you did it.
Your work is good, but you don't have that many links in there. I'm sure you have more work to show. You don't have to have a ton of work on your site, but be able to tell stories about each project. Sound responsible and share what you've learned from them. Then, let him know that your experience can help his cause.

i dont get why those are the1st things in your portfolio - above the fold... i wouldn't even have put them in there... maybe on a second page or something... i understand u r trying to showcase "real" work but.. i mean we all have done things for $ that we're not too proud of lol
- dconstrukt0
taragee:
i understand your point, but the bottom line is that without "those" sites i'd have next to NOTHING in terms of web design work. nothing I can do about that....thats the market I got into and thats the work.
The good news is that I know how to design websites in particular for maximum respose.
I'm a direct marketing web design guru. hopefully that will work with this company.

are you a spammer? :)
- dconstrukt0
Cy: I didnt write the stuff on the sites....well only one of them...mine. htttp://www.ultimatemarketingmin...
but hey, a designer that writes? that CANT be a negative.
I know I need more links. I took out 2 on the suggestion of others and I didnt even think about putting in a few more.........nothing I can do about that.
I'll talk to the guy and tell him about the work, and share with him what I can do for his company.
If they don't hire me, I know its their loss.....I know I'm an asset.
thanks for the tips dude.

i know what YOU'RE saying - maybe u could have each of thos e logos go to a page taht explains them /maybe has some alternate sketches b4 the final - u know? u can hardly see them.. im not jumping down yer throat im just saying that's what hes probably thinking.. i mean the snowboards and stuff r wayyy nicer but they r barely thumbnail size... just a suggestion - what do i know :P
- dconstrukt0
Spammer? WTF?
Dude, spammers send UNSOLICITED BULK emails.
where on earth would you ever get that impression from?
- dconstrukt0
T: thanks dude...yeah I understand.....i wasnt sure how big the stuff would be on screen.....
I put this fucker up basically in about 5 hours total from concept to now.
- taragee0
yeah cuz he said "I viewed the sites you listed and while the banner work is nice, I would
need to see more about what you can do design wise and skill wise." i think you should have all those other pieces link to apage too... or bring it with you - cuz liek yeah those logo marks are asthetically pleasing but i hav no idea what it's for - so - i dont know your thinking - u know?
- taragee0
didnt u have an old site b4? that had these logos on it? with a dog or soemthing?
- toastie0
i'm just kidding, don't get all crazy now ;)
i think that your webdeisgn stuff is geared towards a clientele completely different than the rest of your portfolio. The people that would hire you for that sort of work probably don't care very much about your print and logo design. Just as the people who will consider you for your design skills (that you show very well through your print, logo design and the design of your portfolio) probably wouldnt understand the marketing stuff at all, and having it there would hurt you in the end.
My advice would be to have a separate porftolio that's geared for those sort of people and have one that shows off your true design skills, and isnt hindered by the immature (although i'm sure effective) design of marketing sites.

so what happened
