I hear ya dude. while I love all the new cool shit, I think being simple is best. I dont give a fuck about the "tricks" people do now adays for the sake of doing.
I think everything is to be designed for a reason. whats going to solve the problem, whats going to help the client get to his goal.
thats what design is for. not to just make something look cool.
I'm a fan of swiss design...love it.
