I feel bad for you 4cy....marriage is an amazing and unforgettable occasion that you get to share with your nearest and dearest..I don't *need* the wedding...but I want it..and yeah it won;t change anything about the way we feel about each other...it's more about a celebration of our love for each other.
and a big phat party.

marriage can be extremely beneficial if you're both from different countries (as is the case with my wife and I). We've lived in both the US or Japan with no worries at all about visas or immigration.

"I feel bad for you 4cy.."
why?
it's how life can go.
i tend to associate marriage with other things then love, that's all..
the course of life shaped me that way, that's all.
but i can be a huge flirter sometimes! ;) which is nice..
hehe

heres my take based on a fairly material attachment to fancy stuff..
initial ring-
platinum setting( .8-1 carat) 3-6k depending on clarity VS1 at a minimum.. the more unique the better( bravo jevad)year 2
1.5 min carat ( total) upgradeyear 5
2+ increase clarity VVS1one could increase the spread but the expectaton based on these assumptions would be about 15- 30k over the 5 year or greater span.. i would say the alternate rule is spend the equivalent of the sports car you would finance over the same period of time..
just one opinion
this line of thought it has been used to justify the purchase of the equivalent sports car.. you both upgrade when you can..good livin..
one caveat start modest and upgrade.. if you start high there is only one way to go based on the upgrading assumption....broke

im married... i have no engagement ring as we decided to get married spur of the moment. my wedding ring has a few small diamonds on it, but i never really cared.

$4500 for her first one.
4 small round cuts and one .75 carat trillion cut on top half white gold and half yellow gold around the band. One of a kind.
In our third year she lost it on a flight that we were on.
On our 4th anniversary she got a new one that I had drawn up from memory and had the jeweler make completely custom. It was almost
$5000 I got a better color this time. She was happy and we are still together going strong on 9 years.

$3000. Tiffany.
I did some research on loads of girls in Japan and asked "would you rather have a big diamond with no brand name, or a smaller diamond from somewhere like Tiffany" 90% replied "Tiffany".
(probably just for the box)
Anyway, I'm in Japan and girls adore brand names.
