$5,500 on a .85 karat rock, of my hard earned cash. I couldn't justify spending more.

I spent about 2 weeks salary on it, but I wasn't thinking so much about the SIZE and price as the style, quality, etc.
I never really understood the fascination with diamonds either. My wife loves jewelry, but luckily for me she's as happy with silver as precious gems.

"and sweatshops make half the clothes i wear. my not buying a diamond wont change the world."
The violence, suffering, and depravity involved in getting a sparkly rock into some metal to put on a finger are generally (not always, I would imagine, but usually) several orders of magnitude higher than what's involved in producing an article of clothing in a sweatshop.
One is awful, the other is mind-numbingly horrible.
So ... reamed? No. I am a bit disappointed when someone can't see through the consumerist fog and gets roped or ropes someone else into supporting evil, however.
Why is it that you can see the idiocy in some soccer mom tooling around in a Hummer (comment of yours in another thread) but not the idiocy in festooning onesself with a blood-soaked rock?

Ok so i guess I'm not making enough money to marry yet. But say that I spend two months pay on a ring - why isn't she worth more? I mean you can always do better... Get my point? I don't know...

I feel ya, Bio. But just for the record, what I meant was that you don't want her to be ashamed or embarrassed to show it, and that reflects on you. You're speaking to one extreme, but there's a lot of women who just wanna say "My man is capable of taking care of me." Not that they need someone to, it's just nice.
People like shiny things, that's why they wash their cars. If it makes you feel good about yourself, hell, why not?

Hey I haven't washed my car in weeks.

oh i can see alright. I have no clue where 80% of the stuff I buy comes from and how it got here. It's not my fault what they do in india. but to easy my mind i can ask the jeweler of a kid cut my diamond
getting a simple ring is a lot different than

whoops i accidentally pushed broadcast..
... is a lot different than backing ON TOP of my neighbors car with a H2.
but i may be wrong

What I'm trying to say is that if you buy your girl a big rock ring so that you and she can feel proud when she shows it off to her friends, wouldn't she be even more proud if it had an even bigger rock? Seems like a silly reason to spend that kind of money.

There is a large proportion of diamonds coming from the Canadian wilderness into the US over the last few years. Additionally, it is illegal in some countries to import conflict diamonds at all.
Not all diamonds are from African countries. Time to get off your soapbox ... slowly.

Hey jevad your ring is very nice! Does that thingy do anything?
- shellie0
jevad.. you got a stone to? or is that not a stone
- 4cY0
i would never spend that kind of money on a ring... if the girl is all about that she better find her a new man!
lemme hear ya, guys!
*all the gentleman who are independent; throw your hands up!*
;D

i like your ring, jevad...does the outer part move?
