Ok..here in Nashvegas I've been hearing lots of hoopla about LA and how great it is. Now I'm curious. Is it? What's the design scene like out there? Is there a strong design community? Are all the designers surfers and under 20?? :)
Scratch my curious itch please.

Design scene sux, like everywhere else, I guess. Knock on wood I work in design (2 part time design jobs -- making me a full time web slave without the benefits or holiday/sick/vacation pay).
I know this girl who dropped out of web design after months of looking for work -- now she's in culinary school. There's a lot of desperate, unemployed designers out here and employers are offering ridiculously low pay -- check http://losangeles.craigslist.org… for example. I wouldn't move here -- in addition to the tough job market, finding affordable housing in a safe neighborhood is tough as well.
What's all the hoopla about the hell I call home?

Yuk. Sorry to hear that you are a web slave...its that way the world over I think.
I'm not sure what the hoopla is about other than that its created here by a bunch of musicians who either split their time between here and LA or had some amazing life in LA back in the day.

im a designer in LA and im 20. heh.
there really isnt that much of a tight knit community of anything in LA. people dont really care about each other in LA. thats just my experience though. but i wouldnt trade living in santa monica for anything else in the world. well.. maybe i would to live in europe for a while.. but yeah.. i love it here even thought the people suck.

there are some places that treat you good. my new job at 65media is soooo much better than being a sony music slave.
now i benefits and all the normal stuff. permalancer no more!

congratulations, shellie. I've recently learned that working for the music industry SUCKS. Pays well but not worth the hell.
- shellie0
my job did NOT pay well. the music industry is in the shitter.

LA's not that bad. There is loot to be made that's for sure. It pays better than any other spot I know of save for maybe NYC or maybe SF? A gang of designers just bailed on 65media so you could get a job over there if you'r into doing movie sites.

Genex wins the prize for lamest name EVER.

hey, thats where shellie works. Nah, don't think I'm moving anytime soon. Things are good for me now and though I miss living in a big city sometimes, I'm kinda over it too...I'm just curious about LA. Though, if I had tons of money, I'd live in NYC in a heartbeat.

Genex is a design firm? Makes me think of viagra.
- mbr0
I enjoyed my time at grad school there, but I am sooo glad to be away from there. Now I can actually look at decent places to live/buy.
I would not recomment it to anyone.

Genex is a design firm with a nice site: http://genex.com
When I first heard of the name, I thought "Generation X", with thoughts of popular culture of those in that geriatric age group (which I'm in - -somebody pls get me that cane).
The name isn't bad. I always though Ditech had the lamest name.
- lilbabyleg0
their site looks cool but the name is toy as fuck!

well... i guess its too late now! i'm throwing in my hat and leaving SF for sunny LA in exactly a week. the job market HAS to be better than here... oh, so it seems!

I really like it here in LA. Yes, there are a lot of crappy people here, but I think that's just a result of the fact that there are a lot of people here period. In addition to the crappy people, there are some amazing people here as well.
Also, you can't beat the weather, the ocean and the mountains are close, and if there's particular thing you are into, you can almost certainly find it here. I'm going to have trouble leaving if and when I need to.

I've been living on the coastable beaches just south of LA for the past 1.5 years.
To sum it up...
I'm noving back to Australia in a month :)
