i live in the subbarbs now and i hate it and i love it.. i love hearing the birds chirping in the early mornings, but i hate the commute.. i hate having to wake up hours before i used when living in the city, and i never lived in a "shoebox" while in the city.. i think that is a stereo type that used to be the norm, but with most buildings being new, the size of apt square footages are getting larger. price though is always an issue.. and to maintain the lifestyle you choose, is also very important.

i think going forward for you is to research the school systems in the areas you wish to live.. in NYC there is endless choice from city to private schooling to specialized schools. cost of living in NYC is high, but salaries are generally higher here as well to compensate for that loss of financial security. food is also generally more expensive in the city as well by a large margin.. but everything is workable..

best of luck in your move.. hopefully it will be NYC
