I've spent far too long in the suburbs. Far far too long. So now I've started looking for the next place to live. NYC was an obvious choice but I don't want to live in a shoe box.
Somewhere up and coming that's got flavor and spirit. Not much crime and definitely urban. Any ideas?

Good luck finding a shoebox...

we just got back from chattanooga- little city, but lot of money being spent on the riverfront downtown- pretty cool place.
- been there. very manageable city. river front is nice. reminds me of Raleigh, NC but with a fat river running next to it.zenmasterfoo
- The area is scenic and the riverfront area is great. Parts farther away didn't look great.seed
- The American Art museum was nice too.seed

How do your wife and kid feel about this?
- it was a common feeling that happened to come out at the same moment. daughter is 1 yr old.zenmasterfoo
- If wife wants to move and daughter is too young to care, then I guess the next question is...TenaciousG
- Who do you know in places you like who could help you out? Unless you're looking for a complete break away...TenaciousG

ok, to be clear. I'm married. Staying that way (no divorce no cheating) and have a 1 year old daughter and 8 year old dog. We both came to the decision almost at the same time. It was like we had been thinking or feeling the same way but didn't talk about it...
So, the team is on board. The purpose is the same. The kind of place is the same. The actual pace is not yet known.
- how does the dog feel 'bout this? new trees, hydrants - could be stressful :)ItTango

We have a bunch of friends in NYC. So that's on the table. We have family in Raleigh, so considering visiting, but I'm not sure about design in that town. Honestly, I think I want to create my own place. I've known this area far too long and set roots in it for reasons of fear and habit (change of this nature is tough for me). I'd like to be somewhere new and exciting and mine.
- i know how u feel. we're feeling that way about Chicago... worn the place out.ItTango

i live in the subbarbs now and i hate it and i love it.. i love hearing the birds chirping in the early mornings, but i hate the commute.. i hate having to wake up hours before i used when living in the city, and i never lived in a "shoebox" while in the city.. i think that is a stereo type that used to be the norm, but with most buildings being new, the size of apt square footages are getting larger. price though is always an issue.. and to maintain the lifestyle you choose, is also very important.
i think going forward for you is to research the school systems in the areas you wish to live.. in NYC there is endless choice from city to private schooling to specialized schools. cost of living in NYC is high, but salaries are generally higher here as well to compensate for that loss of financial security. food is also generally more expensive in the city as well by a large margin.. but everything is workable..
best of luck in your move.. hopefully it will be NYC

Find the right balance between what you want and what you need. You want more excitement, but (and I'm presuming) you need good income and good clients in a market that isn't trending down or saturated. Do some research and pester everyone in your contacts list.

hoboken is a terrible idea.
you'll spend most of your time in nyc, and wish you had moved here.
brooklyn, queens and the bronx all have nice areas.- lots of friends in brooklyn.zenmasterfoo
- also living in jersey but working in manhattan will force you to pay a commuters tax..e-pill
- your taxes will be higher than those living in nyc itself..e-pill
- plus... you'll be living in new jerseydirtydesign
