Flash for TV

I just got commissioned at the last minute to do some Adobe Flash animations for a TV program. The specs they gave me are:
"The show is SD NTSC DF, Aspect Ratio is: Anamorphic (16:9 squeezed down to 4:3). We will need a full res quicktime (.mov)..."

I'm guessing the anamorphic thing means it's 16:9 with letterboxing to fill in the 4:3 area, but what size do I make my stage to fit these specs?

A couple friends of mine showed me a portrait that this artist had drawn for them and it was shockingly ugly, but well drawn. Here's about a hundred more of them.

Anybody use this type of service? How reliable is it and is it quick? And most importantly, will I be able to play WoW with it without suffering ridiculous lag? ;)

Flash Slide Presentations

I'm trying to make a Flash Slide Presentation in Flash CS3 for the first time. Each slide contains animations on the timelines. When skipping back to a previous slide, it only shows the final frame of the animation. I'd like to know if it's possible, when skipping forwards and backwards, to show the entire animation of the slide instead of just the final frame.

floating DIVs and Flash

i'm working on a navigation system with drop-down (floating) DIVs. on some pages, the floating DIVs will have to be displayed over Flash SWFs. After placing the SWFs, I've realized that the floating DIVs are no longer visible. I've tried making the z-index of the floating DIV something like 1000 but it still doesn't display over the Flash SWF. is there a fix for this or am I screwed?

Estimate

I am pitching a proposal to a pretty big company this friday and I need to go in there with an estimate.

The project is a full web presence for a fairly big food importing company in Toronto, Canada who owns 3 smaller food companies. The company is very well off and I know they have money.

I'd basically be soloing the project and I have the ability to do so, but because I'd be working on it alone it would probably take about 3 months to complete.

1. Is 3 months too long for a huge website with about 8-10 sections with subpages, a database containing about 2000 products and their corresponding pages?

2. What is a fair amount (in canadian dollars) to ask for this site? For example, is $18000 too much, not enough, or just right?

This will be my first project for a high profile company rather than just coffee houses or small firms, so I need people with a lot of experience to fill me in on what they'd put on an estimate.

Emerging colour trends

Does anybody have a resource on the latest and upcoming colour trends in the design industry?

All I have are the Sherwin-Williams paint guide with the 2006 colour trends

http://www.sherwin-williams.com/…

They will be coming out soon with the 2007 colour guide and I'll get my hands on it soon, but does anybody else have any good colour trend forecasting tools?

Javascript help

I wanted a JavaScript for my blog which would automatically open external links in a new window so I didn't have to add the target="_blank" tag to every link.

I found this:
http://www.serve.com/apg/worksho…

But after using the JavaScript on my site, any href tag wrapped around an img will not open the link in an open window, but rather open a blank window. It seems this JavaScript only works on text links. Can anyone fix this?

new job!

after a month of being unemployed, err... rather, "freelance"... I just got hired yesterday by a firm called MyPixx (www.fotobuch.de)

To start, I'll be the user interface designer for their photobook software "MyBooxx" and then I'll help redesign their website. I might even get a company car ;)

PHP: email validation form

I've got this PHP email validation form on my site:

http://curtis.nexteradesign.com/…

That's basically the meat of it. For some reason, though, some valid email addresses get returned as being invalid. For example "anybody@sheppard.de" or "anybody@ideen-reich.com" come back as being invalid, even though the domains are in fact valid. Help?

"fixed" positioning in IE

How come the CSS property "position: fixed" does not work in Internet Explorer? I'm building a site right now where I would like a small footer to be floating at the bottom of the window, but always be visible, even if you have to scroll down. This is done using "position: fixed; bottom: 0" but in IE it sits at the bottom of the page content instead of at the bottom of the viewing area.

is there any way to fix this?

PNG problems

Why do colour values shift when you save images from Photoshop as PNG? Choose a random HEX value and make a web page with that background, then make a solid square image in Photoshop with that same HEX value as fill colour. Save one copy as a GIF and another as a PNG (8 or 24, doesn't matter).

Put them side-by-side on the page and look at the colours. The GIF should blend right in and be "invisible", but the PNG image sticks out like a sore thumb.

here's an example page:

WHY??

Online Shop

After years of building "normal" sites, I've been approached to build my first online shop.

Where should I start? What's the best eCommerce software to use? After all is said and done, I'd like to be able to build my own shop and not use CafePress or some other template thing.
