Windows More Secure OS X

Regardless of which side you're on (though as a true computing enthusiast, you shouldn't be taking sides), you've heard the arguments back and forth on the which operating system is truly safer – Mac OS X or Windows.

It is of the opinion of Charlie Miller, a well known Mac security guru, that even Snow Leopard, the latest version of Mac OS X, isn't as safe as Windows.

One key point is that Snow Leopard still doesn't have ASLR, or address space layout randomization, which randomly arranges the position of key data making it harder for hackers to target for exploits.

Miller said to TechWorld that Apple didn't change the ASLR from 10.5 to 10.6: "Apple didn't change anything. It's the exact same ASLR as in Leopard, which means it's not very good."

Apple didn’t completely missed the chance to tighten up security in Snow Leopard though, as the new QuickTime solves a lot of the issues that Mac OS X had before.

"Apple rewrote a bnch of QuickTime," said Miller, "which was really smart, since it's been the source of lots of bugs in the past."

One thing that Snow Leopard did adapt, which Windows has had since XP SP2, is DEP (data execution prevention). With DEP, buffer overflow attacks are much harder to execute.

Despite Miller's opinion that Windows is the more secure OS, the large install based of Microsoft-based systems make them a much more attractive target for hackers. Still, Miller would like to see security on all platforms.

"Snow Leopard's more secure than Leopard, but it's not as secure as Vista or Windows 7," he said. "When Apple has both [in place], that's when I'll stop complaining about Apple's security."

Flip ecatalog Software

Hello all,

I thought this had come up here on QBN in the past, but I couldn't find anything through the filter.

I am trying to locate a solid software for building ecatalogs. After much searching I did find this software:

http://www.freshcatalog.com/inde…

Unfortunately it's PC only. I would prefer a Mac based solution. Basically I think my organization is paying too much money (around $700 - $1000 per catalog) to get ours done so I am looking for a way to bring it in-house.

Ideally it would be nice to have a software that can convert from a PDF and be flash based. Also embedding Video and links is a necessity.

Any of you guys/gals use a software like this to build your ecatalogs? Any advice/software recommendations are highly appreciated, thanks ;)

Another craigslist posting

Create 10 real estate web sites (Denver)

Using the templates in Realinvestorwebsite.com, I need someone to create 10 simple web sites about real estate. Each site is about some aspect of investing, such as short sales, buying REO properties, etc.

Each site will be three or four pages. Certain content will be common to all sites.

If you’re not familiar with the Realinvestorwebsite.com, you may not be a good candidate for the job. They provide “templates” in which you create your designs.

Then again, I don’t know. If you’re an experienced designer, it may be a piece of cake for you.

I am a highly experienced and capable real estate writer. The written content and the creative direction will come entirely from me.

I will work with you to collect appropriate artwork images from other sites. We need photos of houses, happy families, etc. But I’d like you to do most of the work gathering the graphics. Ideally, you already have much of what we need.

Each site will convey a different business image or type of emotion. One says we’re a solid, established real estate company. Another says were are compassionate and sympathetic, etc.

Ideally, you’ve done real estate web sites, but I don’t think that’s absolutely necessary. More importantly, you’re a true “designer” who has produced sites illustrating different emotions and corporate images.

Show me your portfolio, or find some ideas borrowed from other sites. I will pay you $20 apiece to design my sites. Or we can barter my copywriting services for your design work.

Public Speaking

I have had several things come up where I've been asked to present in front of my entire company. For some reason I have always been pretty terrified of speaking in front of large groups.

I am curious how many of you QBN'ers have to do this regularly and how you cope with nerves etc. Anyone used to have similar fears, but conquered them over time?

In a way I am glad to be "taken out of my comfort zone" and asked to do these things, since I know I will only get better with time. Nevertheless, I can't help that sinking feeling and nervousness.

Any advice or personal experiences are appreciated :-)

Spike Hardcore Energy

I was at 7-eleven yesterday buying my usual Rockstar energy drink when I got handed a free can of this stuff (only it's the 16 oz)

http://hmtk.com/wp-content/spikeshooter.jpg

Read the label and this stuff has 350mg of caffeine! To put it into perspective RedBull only has 80mg, and Rockstar has 130mg.

Anyone ever tried this stuff? Tastes pretty good. def the strongest energy drink I've seen.

*waits for side effects.

Here is the url:

This is supposed to be a login box, but as you can tell it's broken. I downloaded the latest Flash Player (10.0 r22) after talking with there tech guy. Still doesn't work!

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

King Soopers gas logo

I drove by a King Soopers grocery store today and noticed this logo on the sign of their new gas station. Could this be the worst logo ever?

Simple div sliding

Hope someone can help. Trying to do something similar to what is currently on Apples site ( and probably a million others) with this menu:

http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/7130/picture1n.png

I think it's a combination of Javascript and hidden div tags...but I'm not certain.

Anyone have a link or care to paste some code? Thanks in advance!

Flash download mp3

Hello all,

I was hoping someone could help here....creating a flash site and I have a page with a bunch of "download" buttons to download mp3 audio files. Right now I am just using the following code to link people to the mp3's.

download10.onRelease = function() {
getURL("http://www.davidccook.co... "_blank");
};

This will only play the file within a browser....I am used to html where a user could right click and say "download target as" to download the mp3, but since it's flash this is out of the question.

Is there a way to have them click the button and automatically start downloading the mp3 file?

Thanks for any help!

Large Marge

So as a kid I remember watching Pee Wee's Big Adventure and this part with large Marge seriously scared the piss out of me. I remember being terrified as my brother kept rewinding it and replaying it (you know who you are :) Seriously makes me wonder if Tim Burton was trying to scar kids for life.

Just got done watching this flick tonight, classic movie. Just all around strange like every other Tim Burton movie. It was good to face my fears :P

calling irrelevant

Didn't know of any other way to do this....

Just ordered some shirts from your site, props on having such great stuff.

I am creating a site for someone who is selling apparel. I was hoping I could ask a few questions about your site. Specifically the login/checkout process...I think it works really well on your site. I was curious if you developed it yourself, worked with someone else, or maybe used some type of packaged solution?

If you would be so kind as to hit me up here, or email (email is on my site) I would greatly appreciate it. You can tell me to piss off too :P

Or if aynone else knows some good solutions for login/checkout I would love to hear 'em. My coding skills are not good enough to attempt it myself.

Kids Sites

Hello all,

Was hoping someone could give me some good examples of well done kids sites. I'm doing a microsite and need some inspiration.

I'm looking for fun/crazy organic kind of stuff if that makes sense. I've got alot of good artwork to work with and just need to put it all together in a semi-coherent fashion.

Thanks in advance!

Your job

Been absent from QBN for sometime....

Everyone at my workplace was forced to take off for a long ( almost 2 weeks) holiday vacation and either use existing vacation time, or borrow it if you didn't have any. Things could be much worse, but I am starting to feel a bit twitchy.

With all the unemployed/laid off threads I was curious to see how everyone's workplace is? Are things getting sketchy where you work?
