Social media account naming / branding

Just a question re social media branding / naming for a new organisation.

Let’s say my new company name is Grafico (it isn’t) and I’m based in Australia.

Ideally I’d like to get all the relevant social media accounts branded as just Grafico (ie Instagram.com/grafico) but the chances of that happening are remote.

Let’s say I managed to secure Instagram.com/grafico but all the others (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter) are unavailable and I’d need to go some form of derivation.

What is the best practice...get a handle (ie GraficoAU) for ALL of them for consistency? Or secure the best match for each platform knowing some may be /graficoAU and some may be /grafico ?

And does the handle for each platform actually matter?

And just to confirm, Grafico isn’t the name of the business...just using as an example.

unless there is something about grafico that I don't know, it's very rare for someone to visit your twitter or Facebook by directly typing it into the URL bar. People will visit those socials from your website's social footers. So the point is mute.

Sure it looks clean for branding but not a big deal in the end.

With that being said, I would aim to get it as close as you can for IG (or the one you'll be doing the most posting from) as you may benefit from a little organic search. (Not much)

i've had to do this a few times and what i end up doing is bring in brand language for URLs or instagram account names. so if one thing is grafico, the URL could be getgrafico or grafico-go. consistency isn't really an issue anymore as we're clicking things rather than typing. and you're probably typing the whole URL once anyways.

    • i stay away from location based URLs & social names unless that's part of the brand strategy -- that they're local and will stay local ordoesnotexist
