Hey guys, haven't been very vocal here in a while. I'm 99% sure I'm moving to Montreal this year from near Toronto. (Only been in Canada less than a year)
Anyways, in Montreal right now and wondering if you can suggest any good areas to check out for potentially living in? I remember some of you lived here. Was it Benfal?
Doesn't have to be central but not too far... any suggestions to check out today? Potentially looking at houses to rent rather than apartments as I need to have a studio space...

It really depends on what kind of lifestyle you have and are looking for.
If you like nightlife / youth / trendiness. I'd look in the mile-end which is still somewhat affordable and close to downtown (north of downtown). Mostly apartments here, lots of young people.
The plateau is a neighborhood one step closer to downtown but is more expensive. Mostly apartments here, lots of young people.
If you're looking to rent a house, and want a more quiet neighborhood then you're going to have to go a bit farther away:
Verdun, St-Henri and Point Saint Charles are quiet neighborhoods undergoing gentrification, close enough to downtown. Rent is affordable, lots of working class people.
Notre-Dame-de Grace (NDG) is a working class/family area, is medium-affordable but you're more reliant on buses as there are no metro stations.
Equally, on the north side are Ahuntsic and St-Laurent which are quiet, family & working class areas (a little bit far from downtown, but metro accessible and affordable).

T-Dawg + zarkonite, thanks so much! Really useful information. Can't afford the expensive areas but liked what I saw around Verdun and tomorrow will be checking out near Ahuntsic I think. Love this city! Thanks again for the tips guys.
- Just be careful in Ahuntsic, some areas are ghetto. My nonna used to live there when it was still an Italian hood, some parts have gone downhill since.zarkonite

I lived in NDG when I was in MTL a few years ago, and it's not that bad from a public transport point of view. Look in the radius of Vendôme station, or along the main drag, rue Sherbrooke.
- Mostly houses and low-rises here, too, though ... at least it was in 2011.Continuity
- Thanks man! We were checking that out yesterday!SunSunSun_

Hey, so where did you land?!?!
- Salarrue0
Checkout Ahuntsic between Papineau and Christophe Colomb. Quiet area big parks around in the middle of everything. Great condos for rent.
