I want to record my guitar into Logic, but Im pretty clueless about the best way to do this. I know you can connect the guitar directly, but of course thats going to bypass my amp and I wont be able to get my sound that way.
Do I need to get some sort of audio interface that I run from my amp to the mac? Some way to connect them?

Can you post a link to what I need? They sell a lot of stuff.

Is this it? So with this I run the guitar to the amp, the amp to this, then this to the imac?

You'll need to run your amp into an audio interface. Then track the audio in with a DAW ( logic in your case )
I use something like this - https://focusrite.com/usb-c-audi…
You can go cheaper but the audio quality isn't as good
https://griffintechnology.com/pr…so guitar > amp > audio interface > logic
- You can also run you guitar directly into the audio interface and use VSTs to manipulate the sound.Claymantis

Output from amp into Soundcard input.
As Claymantis said above Focusrite soundcards are decent for the wedge.- Its $440 though.CygnusZero4
- have a look at their range mate, there are loads and they start cheap, just make sure they have the input(s) you need.fadein11

Not excited about basically spending $500 to do this. Will this work? Its only $250. Just learning about this instrument to mac stuff so im lost.
- you don't need to spend $500 on a soundcard.fadein11
- $150 I meant.CygnusZero4
- If your just dicking around, anything will work.Claymantis
- Well yeah but I dont want anything that sounds like complete shit. I also dont want to spend $500.CygnusZero4
- Even the imic doesnt sound that bad. If your just having fun.Claymantis

I use USB - https://focusrite.com/usb-audio-…

- Focusrite is good shit. My nearly 10 year old Pro40 still works great.section_014

^ Ok so thats all I need, correct?
- Yup and talent lolClaymantis
- Talent is the easy part for me. This technical stuff isnt. What wires will I need?CygnusZero4
- Just quarter inch cables from the guitar to the audio interface... audio interface should come with a USB to your computer.Claymantis
- Ah ok I was looking at the inputs on it. They dont look like normal quarter inch inputs so it threw me off.CygnusZero4
- Yea its quarter inch im the middle. The outside ring is for phantom chord. Its basically 2 types of one input in one hole.Claymantis
- So you can plug in a mic and guitar basically.Claymantis

if you're just trying stuff out, an imic will do the job. it's not pro, has a tad more latency than dedicated audi interfaces, but works really well. £33

i used the old version for ages, before splashing out on a s/h audio interface. which is much better, but more £££
- this sounds more suitable to be fair. Just in case :)fadein11
- or even: https://www.amazon.c…
£17!hans_glib - You can also carve the audio waves into stones and sing them back to yourself. Its super cheap.Claymantis
- There are these cheap usb audio input (dongles) for like 3 dollars, you can get too. if you want to be CHEAP.Claymantis

- the carving is a bit too "artisan bro", doncah think?hans_glib

Some of these cheap solutions... you're going to also want a line level converter / DI box to run the guitar into. I highly doubt any of the cheaper suggestions offer anything like this, and you're going to be running a hot signal straight into something that can't handle it.
- < yepkingsteven
- The focusrite listed above has a "line/instrument" switch. Which I assume adds 24db or whatever preamps usually add.section_014

go for the Focusrite mentioned below, decent pre-amps if you decide to mic your amp at some point (the only real way to capture the sound of your amp) in the future or switch the inputs to instrument and it will allow you to take an out from the pre on your amp (you'll still need to run a speaker sim to get a sound like you hear from your amp) or run guitar straight in/ after pedals and run through an amp sim.

Also, does your amp have audio out for this? What amp are you using? Not all amps work as a pre-amp / direct recording out. Even if you have a line-out for an external speaker, from what I recall that signal is going to be hot as hell and the interface probably can't handle that volume.
On an related note, I do a ton of home recording and my biggest dilemma lately has been getting anywhere close to my live amp sound using amp sims in Logic (using Positive Grid Bias Amp). It just wasn't cutting it, so I did a ton of research on pre-amps, other things that I could put before my Apogee Duet recording interface.
Ended up getting the GFI System Cabzeus, which is a stereo speaker simulator. You can configure presets around speaker size, type, mic position, open/closed back. It seemed promising.
I then picked up two cheap Joyo preamps to mimic both my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, and my Vox VR-30 amp. I placed those in the L and R channel going into the Cabzeus. Two words. UH MAZING. It's exactly what I needed. Full rich tone, none of the minimal low end you get with software sims. I was debating other new noise-making pedals and made the right decision to focus on sound quality longer-term, and it's just fantastic.
- Those Joyo's are the shit. I have those plus the small orange and marshall ones. American is my go-to for cleans or a good base. But they're all nice.section_014
- Also, Joyo overdrive/distortion... are nice too. I have the sweet baby and the ultimate overdrive. Crap paint jobs, but great sounds.section_014
- $38 a piece was hard to beat. I'm going to have some audio on my site soon to show what it sounds like with the Cabzeusmg33

i use focusrite 2i4 - got it used for about $130
https://focusrite.com/usb-audio-…- I have this model, I haven't recorded guitar with it but a lot of vocals. Good product especially for the price.fadein11
