Hey crew, anyone ever deal with switching your phone when you moved abroad?
May be going over to Japan from U.S. and would love to hear your thoughts on easiest way to stay connected to folks -
Skype number, ring central, other voip, etc?
Thanks!

I've been using Skype since moving to Europe from Canada. Pretty cheap per minute, and reliable.
- This is on top of my local mobile number, I should add.Continuity
- yep you can get pay as you go sim pretty much anywhere on the planet these days.fadein11

It should be possible in most countries these days to get a SIM card with phone number at the airport when you arrive (assuming you have unlocked phone).
I was in Japan a few weeks ago and I bought one from a vending machine, although I think it was just data and not phone service.

Hey Continuity - thanks for the reply... So, you have a regular phone, plus skype monthly service... So peeps call your skype number and it's fed through wifi to your phone right?
Just a little confused
- Yes, also in your Skype account you can pay for a localised #, a US phone # for instance that's linked to your account.spl33nidoru
- Your US friends can call than # instead of calling your through the app if they preferspl33nidoru

I don't use a Skype number, I just do normal Skype-to-Skype video calling with family. Requires a bit of scheduling, of course, but hey, it works for me.
- I don't use a Skype number, because it's not available for Canadian numbers. :\Continuity

I moved to new zealand from the us, and got a new zealand number. I facetime and whatsapp with friends.
I also own some rental property in CA, and wanted a local number for the tenants to reach me. I got setup with Twilio. They call a CA number, and it routes to my NZ cell phone. Costs $1 a month for the number, and about a cent a minute. Works great
- Thats crazy pricing!antimotion
