Here's a video I've been playing with the past few weeks,
Explores patterns and uses a lot of times reflections and other tricks in order to create the illusion of something that is not actually there.
Had the brilliant idea of rendering it in 4K... This is something I'm not going to do again any time soon! It took forever to render and had to use external services in order to finish it up!Don't know exactly how to embed videos so forgive me if the link sends you to YouTube instead of playing underneath the text

Thanks guys!
Sted I will follow your suggestion. I don't even know how I managed to forget about this thread!

Lovely.
Did you render one repeatable 'square' tile, repeat across the frame in Aftereffects, time remap it to have the transitions happen at different times, then overlay a gradient to give the sense of light coming from the right side?
If not, then that might have been quicker, perhaps not easier, than rendering the whole frame at 4k from 3D software.

Could probably be cheated in some way but I went full bananas! And also building it in Cinema was probably faster to do for me.
You also get a lot of the light interaction and reflections from the surrounding tiles for free in Cinema which you would probably lose in AE. Not that it matters a whole lot but it adds a little bit to the whole look. And all that of course added to the rendering time! The rendering part was painful!
If I went for 2k everything would be much more manageable! But wanted to try the 4k out. Now I know what a pain it is!
It wasn't just the rendering part that was insane it was also managing the sheer amount of data, and dealing with everything in editing.
The rendered frames alone were totalling 90GB of data!Thankfully Google's Zync service came to the rescue. They offer 300$ of rendering as a demo for their service! Used up two demo accounts! Should have been cheaper but also made a lot of mistakes while learning the new service

this really looks nice!
yea, the 4k thing is a bit heavy when you dealing with renders and passes and all..kinda wanted to see one pattern where the faces had animated sequences heheh, maybe a patterns 2? :D
I loved it!

The funny thing is that I started off with the idea of having animated patterns but when I tried it out it didn't work so nicely. But that was at the beginning of the connecting phase so a lot of things didn't look right then!
Yeah I think trying this out on a new video wouldn't be such a bad idea!

So good - I half expect to see this copied everywhere late rthis year :)
