À propos de Nice (1930)

Nice, France is a place I've wanted to visit for a few years now.

I took a film class in college called Film and Genre. The professor had done her dissertation at Rutgers University for the graduate program in French. It was titled, EMPIRE AND EXOTICISM IN FRENCH FICTION CINEMA, 1930-1939

It was a really cool class, she showed us a few textbook "Film School" type movies which were enlightening and educational. But one film we saw during the silent film part of the semester especially stood out and has stuck with me for a while now.

The news in Nice this week reminded me of it, so I found it on YouTube and watched it a few times again. After watching it in the class I spoke with the instructor and told her that I would like to recreate the whole film with the same shots and sequences, even use the same soundtrack.

I wonder how long it would take to capture all the footage to edit something like this. I fear the "actors" in my version will not move and act the same as they do in this 1930's version, certainly not dress the same either. :-( This could be a cool project for me on weekends. If you have 20 minutes to kill check it out.

"Jean Vigo was twenty-five when he made this, his debut film, a silent cinematic poem that reveals, through a thrilling and ironic use of montage, the economic reality hidden behind the facade of the Mediterranean resort town of Nice. The first of Vigo’s several collaborations with cinematographer Boris Kaufman (Dziga Vertov’s brother and a future Oscar winner), À propos de Nice is both a scathing and invigorating look at 1930 French culture."

Also my city doesn't have a major parade like Carnival so I'd have to find another event to cover..

I lived in a village just outside of Nice for a couple years...it's a very charming city, the beach still looks a lot like in that film. If you have an excuse to go, you might as well take it!
