4 years of art school, and I still don't really understand modern or abstract art. I didn't major in fine arts but i'd like to understand it more.

There are so many different kinds of modern art, all with different ideas and influences behind it. There is not a single piece of knowledge that makes a lightbulb go off and suddenly you "understand" modern art.

Also...it's hard to understand modern art without context as most movements are a reaction to what can before. I highly recommend the book above as a primer...then you can move onto more specific texts on the modern.
