If you had a extra few thousand, maybe up to 10K, is there anything smart you can do with it to make more money? Or is it not enough money unless you buy the perfect stock?

Mutual fund or annuity. Tuck it away and forget about it.

I tried trading with that amount. it could be tricky. I made more $ in the end but messed up somewhere in the middle took 2 weeks to recover.
Its time consuming for research. pick your time frames for trades.. can be stressful if you feel you are not rich etc.

Do you have other things invested? If not, find a diversified mutual fund (Vanguard's Wellington and Wellesley are good options) or an S&P 500 tracking fund.
If you want individual stocks, pick three diversified ones and sit back. Contribute more when you can.

Large diversified funds are kinda crap. Might as well bet on an index.

I asked almost the exact same question on here a few years ago and the QBN gods deleted it. It was back when they heavily moderated the site and a troll named Hedge was always trolling about money. It was a serious question though and I ended up taking my 10K and buying a VW Westfalia with it and pocketing a few thousand spending money. Not the wisest investment but those Westys really do hold their value.

I'm doing the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund. Also playing with Lending Club which is doing well for me. Both were suggested by Mr. Money Mustache's blog.

Interesting blog, that Mr Mustache blog, thanks mtgentry!

Honestly, with 10k i'd go all in on a personal investment... something like timber land or solar power. The only way you'd make real money on an outside investment of 10k is if you had a friend who needs a cash infusion for a great business plan that is already off the ground and s/he is willing to give you shares.
Otherwise, if you want to just sit on it, I'd put it in something singular and not fluctuating, like a bond, or some stable commodity.
That or buy timber land and sell the logging rights to a particular stand of timber to clear a nice wooded grove for your new getaway cabin.

Just start a bed and breakfast. Right?
