I think it depends on the client, if it´s an emerging artist and he´s paying from pocket, charge hin 1.5 k, if his7her gallery is paying then 2k or 2.5 k sounds correct.
But if the client is at Koon's or Pharrel's level... dude go for 5, 6 ,7k
Makes sense?

seems cheap no? 200 pages @ 1 hour per page average for layout design ect = 200 hours minimum @ $50/hour = $10k at least.
Artbooks are quite image heavy, a lot of thought has to be put into the layout and design elements.
- unless it's not layout and production, then yeah, a lot less._niko
- what else is there besides not layout and production?doggydoggdog
- Cover? design? Look and feel? then they hand it off to a less expensive production artist to roll out the pages._niko

Depends on how good you are as well.

my advice is to start by asking them their budget. designing a book is kind of like building a house. sure, you can make a 15k house or a million dollar house. the same is true with books.
without knowing the exact artist and constraints, i think you'd at least need to be in the 10k range. ideating, sourcing vendors, managing pass throughs, meetings, and admin alone (i.e. no actual design work) can be a major time suck.
