I recommend the Nexus 5. I'm a Galaxy S4 user but have used Nexus 5 and the Z1 and the Nexus 5 just looks and feels better.
Nexus 5 also runs stock where both HTC and Sony devices come with their respective bloatware,
- HTC and Sony bloatware are pretty nice imo. Certainly compared to the shower of almighty fuck that Samsung useset

I got a Nexus 5 as my first Smartphone (if I ignore the Firefox Dev phone I stupuidly bought) and it's a pretty, pretty good piece of kit.
It is, obviously, Googled up to the earholes so I'm not sure how that would gel with your somewhat paranoic, anti-establishment narrative..
- Downsides as I see it - no SD card slots (no biggie), pain in the ass battery swap and it's a new phone if the screen cracksdetritus

I had the Sony Xperia Z for a year and it was the best phone i ever had. Far better than the iPhones I had previously. Highly recommended.
The other week my girlfriend got an HTC one which is equally as nice, if not a little more classy looking. I've been wanting to get a bigger phone and get rid of my iPad for a while so I've just got the HTC one max. Most people find it too large when i show them but it's perfect for me. Still fits in the pocket but is big enough to replace my iPad too.
I use my phone as a tablet far more than I do as a phone so it works for me.
Can't go wrong with the Xperia Z or HTC one though.
Main difference is the HTC has better speakers and the Sony is waterproof.

I like the MotoX, personally (I have an iPhone 4S now). It just fits so well in your hand, great materials. I just can't get on board with Android...if HTC One had Windows I'd get that (they are coming out w an update, I think).
- Each to their own but android stands out a mile compared to iOS and Windows from my perspectiveset
- yup, choices...looks like a total design mess to me, bizarre functionality, etc.formed
- iOS is ok, but boring and (mostly) unattractive, ihmo. Windows is consistent and looks nice, not ancientformed
- When was the last time you used android and on what device? It looks great.set
- Google are leading the way in design finally. You must have used an old version.set
