I'd recommend the Sony NEX range.
I've got the 5N and love it.
You can get it with the 18-55mm lens.
The more you get in to the camera the more lenses you can get.
They take awesome HD video too! It's small and "pocketable" or "bagable".

^yeh nex are great.
It's tough to say without knowing more about how your dad shoots. But if he wants a lightweight, interchangeable lens camera a nex, or a micro four thirds are great.
Nex 6 is my fave. Lens selection is much wider on micro four thirds though. Olympus omd em5 would be my fave m43 cam. It was a clear step above the rest when it was releasd. The first m43 to be as good as an aps-c sensor camera (particularly low light).
Good luck!

I usually wouldn't recommend interchangeable lense to someone who's is not a gear head. and also the best camera is alway the one that's with you or easy access. so some what compact and none interchangeable lense.
my recommendation would be fuji x20. really quick focus. focal point 18mm-112mm at f2 and 2.8. HD at 60 fps. with shit load of features you don't need but it's there if you need em.
second would be Sony RX100
