so I ended up picking up a 1tb thunderbolt drive. i've moved all of my adobe files and photos over to it as it is faster to work off of the external because the drive inside is 7200 rpm vs. the 5400 rpm drive inside the macbook.
given that I have fast external storage now I'm thinking about upgrading the internal drive to SSD to make my computer much more lively and hopefully I can push back upgrading this machine for a while

i try not to use the system disc for anything really except music & apps.
all work files are on separate drive and scratch discs are external drives. i have a few 500gb lacie rugged drives.
- do you use thunderbolt/usb 3.0?

so I'm running out of HD space on my macbook pro and in turn I can't run programs because I have no more scratch disk space.
thinking of adding a 1-2tb thunderbolt drive to work directly off of... and also getting a cheap usb 3tb drive to time machine everything. What are you guys using??
