I see designers occasionally list speaking engagements on their CV?
Do these (not even famous) designers just get invited randomly to talk and maybe get flown out and put up in a hotel? Some designers have presented their work all over the US.
Things like http://www.designmadison.com/ and http://psu.gd/category/blog/show…

are you looking for a job where you talk or where you design?
if you talk a lot or even talk to yourself, you should list all of that on your CV.. if you design, you should list all your design strengths. and keep your mouth shut.

I am not looking for a job or speaking opportunities right now, but I am curious why some people do seem to have a lot of them.

shows that you're engaged in your career more than collecting action figures in your cubicle.
very little downside to promoting yourself. even when it's about promoting yourself.
e-pill is just cranky that the AIGA fairy left coal in his stocking this year.

freeddddddom, you don't get it, because you have nothing to offer.

The speakers are not being invited randomly. Someone thought, "Hey, this person has something to say that other people might want to hear. Plus, I've got this microphone just sitting here doing nothing."

Also, lulz @ "not even famous".
