Typeface or Typography?
Excellence in a typeface depends on its ultimate use. What will it be used for. An excellent face for setting a novel will be different from one used for large motorway signage.
As for excellence in typography, well that's a big topic, but line lengths, type size and other issues of readability as well as letter spacing/kerning. Correct typesetting conventions, ligatures, ragging, hyphenation, widows, non-lining figures for numbers in body copy, correct use of en/em dashes...there's lots to consider!

i think the question begs,
What elements makes a font better than all other fonts? and guessing usability.

Yes, I know that excellence can be found by many ways...
No, detritus, I just don't want to download a font and 'let it do all the work for me'.
Maybe I would have written 'What is your favourite typeface or typographic treatment for defining excellence'...

I couldn't be bothered with seeing which Typography thread this is most appropriate in, so I'm throwing it into the most recent. Here's a nice little Tumblr site.

Baskerville is right.
Type - like anything else - is nothing without prudent and meaningful context.
