I have an object with a lot on it which is set to cast mental ray shadows, and using the mental ray renderer, but my object doesnt have self casting shadows. Shadows only seem to be on the floor below the object.

I don't know much 3D but by what you say, it seems you only turned on cast shadows, you need to turn on receive shadows as well maybe. something like that..
^ That doesnt exist in 3d studio. I figured it out, I needed to use a mental omni light rather than the standard omni light.
