I'm going to go ahead and disagree with
I think is 100% user preference.
I don't really use a pad myself, but I have seen a lot of people using it not only for motion graphics but for video editing too. Some people I know, even use it to navigate inside the OS, which is insanity to me, but hey...

I would recommend one of these instead: http://www.3dconnexion.com/
- Really? I feel like I would hurt myself with that - pretty intense : )antimotion

So stick with the mouse for AFX - for illustration go with tablet.

I only use my intuos in PS or Illustrator. I don't like it outside those apps. not enough stability for precision pointing/selecting stuff. plus it's awkward if you need to constantly put it down to write with both hands where the mouse you just lift your hand, no need to worry where and how it will land.

After Effects is more of a precision tool (mostly working with numbers), can't see these being much benefit apart from maybe for rotoscoping

Trying to seriously get into After Effects...
Are these types of pads a hindrance to the workflow, do they help in a positive way or is it really users preference?
Note, I also illustrate so I know it would be cool for that....
