iPhone UI

This isn't intended to start a mac vs. pc flamewar; I'm looking for feedback. Do you really love your iPhone?
I've been using WP8 for a while now. Yesterday I put my SIM card in my iPhone 4S to test a client app and I'm surprised by how much I hate the UI. WP8 provides so much feedback and the iPhone's notifications are so generic.
Ex: my 2 (work and gmail) emails are under the email chicklet and I see the number of unread emails (which looks daunting). On WP8 I only see new emails since I last looked...and I can separate those emails if I want (which I do).
Does brand love override great user experience?

I feel the iOS UI has been in need of a refresh/overhaul for a while now. I suppose we'll have to wait and see what Jonny Ives has up his sleeves.

i prefer all that information to be hidden until i want it. it bugs me to look at the windows screen and see every bit of information right there from the get-go. all my apps are in folders and the first screen has just my calendar. i appreciate that both exist and understand some people like seeing that information, but i don't.
- so i guess i'd rather see my brand (bg image) and not information.doesnotexist
- the great thing is that you can personalize it to show what you want. Another + for me.monkeyshine
- guess i'm not into the personalization, just want it to work out of the boxdoesnotexist
- Sounds like iOS doesn't work out of the box for you.zarkonite

My only criticism of the WP8 UI is that the People live tiles are a little deceptive. They appear to be more relevant than I think they actually are. It would be nice if they appear by activity or relevance as it relates to me but I don't think that's the case.

WP8 animations are cool for a few days. But then you just end up being frustrated waiting for them to end. The iphone feels dated but it works. Honestly the only thing that keeps me on iOS is group txting and emoji. Oh and whatever new social media app thats all the rage this week.
Can't wait for a new iOS

iOS is out of date. I look forward to seeing what they come up with next.
For now, android is far and beyond iOS. Haven't really used W8

I don't like all the photos on the homescreen

New Blackberry UI all the way
- I had a play with that in the store... it was seriously the most confusing unintuitive UI i've ever used!set
- No way man, it's the bestest and it makes Apple look even worse. Omg, they're so going bankrupt.monospaced
- Since Steve died nobody knows what to do with the iPhone, so naturally they're just letting it die.monospaced
- Agreed...nothing wrong with the BB. I thought / think the Z10 is a great phone.see_thru

^ yeah. skipping the BB. i'm due for an upgrade soon. BB is obsolete imo. my gf has a Samsung. i reckon i'll go with the newest model when i upgrade...
- dude, the bb just came out, it's awesome, I tried it. OMG Apple and Android are outdated and will fail unless they innovatemonospaced
- because a phone is all about the features and the amazing UI, everyone knows tahtmonospaced

- you're right, phone UI is no joking matter, lives fucking depend on itmonospaced

I can see your point about the notifications but it would be a stretch to say that iOS doesn't have a good user experience. Give people some credit - they aren't just being brainwashed by the cool Apple brand.
- but what is good about the UI? I don't really like Android either but at least they've improved.monkeyshine

I think its crazy that we still have to click on shit to have something happen in an interface.

Overall, I love the iOS interface, and I'm not _too_ scared of what Ives will do with iOS7.
That having been said, lock screen notifications — the notifications functionality in general, really — are as useless as a marzipan dildo.
A few years ago, Teehan+Lax had done a mock-up of what their best-case scenario for the lock screen would be:
http://www.teehanlax.com/blog/ip…
For a time, the dude who runs Cydia was going to develop it for jailbroken devices, but it went pear-shaped.
Anyway, the point is, looking at that PS comp now, I still think it would be the single-most useful new feature for iOS, and I dearly wish Apple overhauls notifications to look and behave like what T+L proposed.
- good idea, great idea. i still like my notifications hidden. :Ddoesnotexist
- Well, obviously, the user should have the freedom/option of hiding them.Continuity
- I am always concerned on how apple always decides what it wants you to access.yurimon
- i like that they have an opinion about it, most don't. they just give you everything without thinking about it.doesnotexist
- I like notifications, and they can be turned off. Whats the problem again?CygnusZero4
- There'll be less skeuomorphism.see_thru

I like that teehanlax version for notifications. It is way more natural. Most importantly the system needs to be flexible to individual preference. I love that I can see on wp8 my upcoming meeting and go to calendar for more. I love that I can see weather at a glance. I also love that I can see an aggregated view of all of my social activity without having to download a separate app.

Right now I hate my iPhone 5....really wish I'd got a BBZ10.

Does brand love override great user experience?
Of course it does, it always did. Marketing 101 tells you that an emotional connection is the strongest link between a brand and it's user.
That being said, you are confusing nice looking design with user experience. I've used the windows phone, and I loved the look of it. Way better than the iphone for sure.
To me, user experience, goes beyond the look and it also includes functionality and reliability. Which (completely subjective option here) I don't think you can get from a windows machine.
However, I'm completely comfortable saying that I'm brainwashed by apple, not because I'm an apple fanboy, but because I just had frustrating experiences with Windows / Microsoft products over the years.
Is Apple the best option out there? probably not. But I rather try something I haven't used before before I give Microsoft another chance.
- He's talking about feedback and notifications... it's not only the visual design he's raising issues with.zarkonite
- No, I'm not confusing visual with UX...I'm talking about the user interface and interaction. I'm a UX Designer, by the way.monkeyshine
- ...and you lost a little credibility when you said you'd try anything other than MS. :)monkeyshine

Which brand has the most suicides committed by its slave work force?
Is that what they call "end user" experience?
or backend kernal panic?

Technology used to feel limitless.
Today, it feels more limited than ever in the form of Apple OSX & iOS; lack of customization, flexibility, etc. etc. etc...
These limits are hardly lessened on any platform as technology appeals to the masses (consumers) rather than specializing more to any given audience; I guess this is where applications (or apps) come in.
Personally, I'd love to see a community-driven, open source OS capable of emulating applications built for all OS cross device. I guess that is the goal of HTML5?
The "golden years" of technology seem to have come & gone.

iOS7 will make or break Apple. Quality has caught up with them and, miraculously, the competition has figured out that people pay for nice design and quality (unlike the PC market, that they still have yet to figure out that quality, construction, consistency, etc., all matter).
Android - what I really want to see is how this arena is pushed via the "new" liking of "flat" design and Windows Phone.
Prediction: iOS7 will be enough to keep 50-75% of the fan boys happy enough to buy an iPhone6. The rest will shrug their shoulders with a soft "meh" and buy what they like best, not what they "think" they like best.
Personally, I am waiting for the HTC One to have Windows. When it does, I am fairly certain I'll be upgrading and saying goodbye, and good riddance, to Apple once and for all.
- Willing to bet on that?monospaced
- lol @ preferring windows over androidset
- How is Android better than Windows?monkeyshine
- I can't stand Android as it is now, Windows looks great. Not sure how anyone could argue differently, at least from a design standpointformed

- sure, I'll bet. I bet on Google and that has done well, wish I had on MS, as it has too...Apple, eh...formed
- The whole 'android is badly' designed argument is long gone. I used to say the same. Not the case anymore.set

Remember when people got bored of the iPod UI and the market fragmented into 50% iPod and 50% split between other players.
Yeah I don't remember it happening either.
