i've played with windows 8. while it's nothing too spectacular, i really appreciate what they've done, especially when paired with the microsoft surface:
essentially you have a full pc. you plug in a keyboard and mouse into the provided usb ports, your monitor to the hdmi port, boot up and switch to desktop mode to use windows the way you always have.
then, you unplug everything, take the surface with you, go to a coffee shop or hop on a plane or whatever, boot up and swith to metro mode (or desktop still if you prefer), all crafted for an experience best suited for a mobile touchscreen device.
the mac equivelent doesn't exist, but if it did, you'd be able to do the same but switch between ios and mac os. then, however, they'd have to outfit their tablet line with standard io ports and tarnish that clean exterior shell, which in my opinion is kinda old and boring by today's standards... lucky for me i'm already more of a windows user than mac and make my living as such.. good for me.
- Yeh man, a touch tablet interface and full desktop computer in one box is the futureHombre_Lobo
- Shame the rt pro tablet is so expensive. But it's progress.Hombre_Lobo
- Also welcome back! been a while iircHombre_Lobo

of course, i failed to mention the obvious - the problem with the scenario of switching between ios and mac os is the lack of exposed file system on ios.
if they actually ever went in that direction i wonder if everyone would accuse them of ripping microsoft? we'd have come full circle at that point, i suppose (pirates of silicon valley)

Agreed utopian. But I still feel like Windows 8 is a huge pain in the ass.
I downloaded a hack to put back the Start button and classic menu. And I eliminated using W8's "tile based applications" and so that the experience is basically like W7.
Solved 99% of my angst.

Microsoft Said to Cut Windows for Tablet Prices
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is cutting the price of its Windows software for small tablets, seeking to shore up foundering efforts to combat Apple Inc. (AAPL) (AAPL) in the mobile-computing market, people with knowledge of the matter said.

My main gripe with windows is that it isn't unix based like that of Linux, and Mac os.
Unix just seems to be from what I've seen a lot better in every aspect. The whole idea of a modular os (unix) is just so clean and charming, unlike windows which kinda puts its roots of its program's into all sorts of nooks and crannys in a rather inelegant way.
Overall I'm actually indifferent on my os, although probably leaning towards mac os, but my preferred os would be Ubuntu running adobe apps.
I just find some instabilities in windows really annoying.
Just like I find things about mac os annoying, but unix just seems so much more solid.

My mother just showed up with a new laptop with win8, and she hates the thing, I mean she really hates it. a lot. I tried to help her with some basic stuff. It was my "first" experience with it outside of browsing it at a store. What the fuck is that shit? It's a disaster. A fucking mess. And on top of everything horrific and completely broken, it tells me that in order to log in to Skype with a different account, I need to logout of Windows and create a new user for the whole system. WTF. Really?
- i know! the skype thing baffled me! i use skype as do the kids, so now i dont bothercruddlebub
- but... but, it's better than the iPad!monospaced
