In a typical agency structure who would hire someone to do UI design?
- Creative Director
- Art Director
- Project Manager

you mean for freelance?

Yes. There's a big agency near me that I'd like to approach. I just don't know who I should contact.

contact all of them,
but the priority should be the AD and CD

I would hire you but I'm looking for a full timer.
- You could use me until you find that perfect fulltimer. :)mathinc
- I could, but I'm growing a team. I'd rather get it right from the go. Any chance you'd leave AZ?
zenmasterfoo - I hear you. No, I'm really focused on growing my company here. Plus, I live in the mountains and love it.mathinc

Your best bet would be the art director in my opinion. The creative director usually don't know dick about design/UX/UI/etc... The art director will usually make or break and opportunity for a new hire, good luck.

Agreed, though I would say start with the AD and the PM. PMs sometimes keep people in their back pocket to show to new or different ADs when they think the talent might be right for a project.

^ Kind of what I was thinking too. Especially since one of the project managers I found contact info for used to be an art director. Thanks!

Note that SOMETIMES I have seen UI designers hired in part to "fix" a design made up by print designers who have no idea about interaction, and the people doing the hiring were senior account staff and senior creative director going over the heads of the art director who took the wrong approach and they had hire a UI pro to rescue the gig, give a great demo with flourish and show how well it worked, not just looked.... so many not what you think....

You can go either of two ways: a Senior AD or — if the agency has a production or so-called 'Creative Technologies' department — the head of that unit. Frankly, UI/UX has been drifting away from creative departments, in my experience, and more towards these production types.
- Although PMs can be good, too, especially if they have a habit of going over people's heads.Continuity

Ah print designers thinking they can design for web.
That ol' can of worms.

stay away from agencies if you want to do good ui/ux work.
