Earlier, this year, a Mexican think tank — the Citizens' Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice — released a study ranking the world's most violent cities in 2011, and the results were astonishing.
The 20 most violent cities were all in Latin America.
The USA had some alarming scores too, led by New Orleans at 21.
Other dangerous cities were located in Africa. None of the top 50 were in Europe and only one was in Asia, despite great unrest in those regions.

supposedly I live in #13
I love this place though, Its very humbling.
less crime here than Mexico City which is not even on the list,
the reason being, Culiacan is home of the Sinaloa cartel http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sin… and the Sinaloa cartel polices just as much as the police (in their own way) because they dont want/need the extra crime/attention in their AO.I feel more confident walking through the worst parts of Culiacan at night with my camera (which ive done alone) than walking through hunters point in SF (which I havent done and will not ever do) during the day.
murders, yeah lots of them, but its all cartel related, if your not affiliated your actually safer here than most places.
Plata O Plomo, thats the rule, oh and shut your mouth, thats the other. there's no random murders here, their all hits. its pretty well organized. Ive met/drank with some of these guys, the big guys up the chain are really mellow, really cool guys, its the soldiers with something to prove that someone should worry more about, but again, its mostly Narco related.

Mexico has that many cities?
No wonder people want to come here.

Why no Thailand, Eastern Europe, Central Africa?
- Because Eastern Europe is safer than those cities presented.Continuity

My city is at the sixth spot on that list (Caracas) it's been 10 years since I moved from there.
Every weekend there are around 50 murders +/- in the whole country just last year there were 20 thousand violent deaths. Compare that to the 4500 violent deaths that happened in 1998 when Hugo Chávez came to power.
- The 50 murders number is just Caracas each weekend.ernexbcn

Brazil brazil everywhere.

remember, the list is based solely on murder rates (amount of murders per population) and excludes other violent crimes, armed robberies, rape, etc.

Chicago's got a high murder rate... and I live right next to Humboldt Park, which is supposedly a gang mecca, but it has a lot to do with if your neighbors know you, if they do, shit doesn't tend to happen to you....
When I lived in England, there was of course a low murder rate and little to no gun crime, but a shit ton more angry bar fights that never show up in any statistics....

You can thank the war on drugs for the high murder rates in so many Latin American countries. There's also most likely a correlation between gang violence and the drug trade around the globe.

Not a single Canadian city on the list. But then there are single American cities with more murders per year than all of Canada combined.
